What is that ability? It's memory. The ability to memorize detailed instruction. Some got it, some don't. Its memory, not intelligence, that erroniously defines intelligence. If some of the higher folks can remove an anyeurism and not change oil in their car, well, I guess they're not so intelligent after all are they. How I see it anyway.

Your views on education are SEVERELY out of date.  Memorization has long been proven to be a fruitless pursuit.  In today's world problem solving is focused on, not memorization.  Take computer programming for example.  A good programmer typically has a pocket reference or a website detailing function calls pulled up at all times, because it's virtually impossible to remember the syntax to every facet of a particular language (particularly when you're not even just working in one language - on any given day I could be coding in C, C++, C#, Perl, PHP, Java, Visual Basic, or T-SQL - VERY occasionally even COBOL).

Instead of memorizing syntax, you learn how to look at a problem and break it into steps.  You have to see a process and understand how to break it into something solvable by a system of loop statements and conditional logic.  You have to understand how different types of data are stored - when to use a B-Tree or a Linked List or an Array.  Does it need to be sorted?  Is the data-structure self-sorting?  If it needs to be sorted is this data type the type of thing that would be best handled by a quick-sort or a radix sort or a bubble sort (ok, the answer is NEVER a bubble sort ;))?

Learning what a string tokenizer is and when to use it is far more important than remembering exactly how it works.  If I need to use it I can pull out the quick reference to get the exact syntax.

In short, in most professional positions, the skill is in recognizing a problem and identifying what exactly you need to look for, not in memorizing every minute detail.  Critical thinking over memorization.

This isn't an elitist thing.  I think that by far the majority of people CAN think critically, but the problem is that kids aren't pushed to do so.  They're more obsessed with the latest sports star or what's on TV to even try.  And the ones who do?  It's socially acceptable to call them "nerds" or "geeks" or anything else you might think of because as a society it's become ok to shun them.

In short, we're becoming a nation of idiots - not because most people are dumb - because they've been convinced that ignorance is bliss.  All the better in the eyes of some I guess.  As long as they have their bread and circuses the ignorant masses will comply with whatever you feel like imposing on them.

Back to the point. I can see where banning DDT has helped, as just a couple hours ago, I had some red tailed hawks circleing me while in the garden, and see bald eagles quite frequently. Fox, coyote and farming practice's do more harm to the rabbit and pheasant around my area. If there was sufficient lead poisoning to the wildlife, I'm sure that there would be much hulabloo over it on our local news. Havn't seen it. As far as lead poisoning in game animals I eat, and feed my family, that's my concern. Rather have them eat deer, fish, rabbit I kill or raise, than hormone injected meats. Just another way the fed's are trying to control us. gypsyman

There are findings now that prove that much of the data that proved DDt did not hurt the birds was omited . Seems the guy who had the authority to ban DDT was friends with people who had an agenda and other products . I wish I could give the source but can't remember it . Maybe some others can remember. Seems global warming was not the first BS spread to pass laws

It's easier for over educated idiots to manufacture problems and then produce BS antidotes than deal with real problems.
Because they have no common sense no work ethic and no sense of reality. If they couldn't suck up the peoples money they would be homeless street beggars.

We used DDT on the farm and had several hawks every year . Lead in gas did more harm ! It is still in high concentrations along our older roads .

Here is the e-mail address of Lisa Jackson the person responsible for this BS at the EPA.

jackson.lisa@epa.gov

My e-mail to her below about sums it up but I think she needs to hear from everyone here at GBO. The more the better. The people have kept their cushy civil jobs for to long with limited to zero accountability.

Hi Lisa

With what i have witnessed on the news in the past few years and with the complete
waste of taxpayer dollars going toward paying salaries like yours for doing a job poorly done
I am beginning to become embarassed to tell people I am a U.S. Citizen. I seriously hope
you have accomplished more in the past few months, years or however long its been since you came up
with the idea to ban lead ammunition as a way to significantly improve the environment.

If you haven't I can tell you with the utmost certainty that your employement in any private sector job
would have been terminated as soon as you brought up the subject. How many hours have you wasted at your desk
with this idea?

Shouldn't someone in your position be thinking bigger picture? If not could you please forward me a job application form
for the EPA. If ideas like yours can keep someone in a high profile position just about anyone would have upper management potential in your organization.

A ban on lead hunting ammunition would have about the same environmental benefit as having 1 person
not pee into the pacific ocean.

Please get to work on something usefull, America can't afford any time wasters right now.

The main problem today is that we are educating stupid people beyong their natural intelligence level. And as Ron White said "you can't fix stupid".

We have a whole lot of folks running this country who cannot process things at the level they are educated to.

This is an attempt at back door gun control and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the environment.

It's Over! They denied the petition!!! ;D

They denied the ammo part of it.  Fishing weights are still under review.  Ammo is admittedly the bigger concern though, so that's good.  Fishing weights are reusable.  It would be aggravating to lose lead fishing sinkers but truthfully I'd still fish just as much.

They admitted they don't have the authority nor are they seeking such authority.

I seriously hope you have accomplished more in the past few months, years or however long its been since you came up with the idea to ban lead ammunition as a way to significantly improve the environment.

yadayadayada [emphasis added]

Unfortunately, and embarrassingly, YOU MISSED IT.  You pointed your finger in the wrong direction.  Had you read who Lisa P. Jackson is and who the Petitioner's are, you would have known that Lisa had NOTHING to do with the petition forwarded to the EPA.  She didn't write the petition; fund the research; push her agenda; or create the atmosphere for its inception.

She is the Federal Government's hired ADMINISTRATOR of the EPA and as such it is in her job title TO RECEIVE such drivel, to assemble an investigative Team, and to interpret and review the petition in accordance with Federal Statute if it has merit.

Come On Man!  To be taken SERIOUSLY means to write comprehensively, intelligently, and not KNEE JERK.  Your accusation and premise that Lisa P. Jackson, Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was responsible for this is just wrong.  Tarring and feathering the Head of the Department that merely RECEIVED the petition would be in poor taste.

Fortunately, in this case, half of We The People got a pass.  She WAS thinking "bigger picture" as you requested.  The petition is halfway rejected.

Now, each of us on GBO should offer an opinion on behalf of our fishing buddies and our fishing-selves.  You can bank on the Liberals to be back another day petitioning for the demise of lead in ammunition.
