Need Quick Advise on Encore Scope Mounts
« on: December 03, 2003, 02:22:05 PM »
I am buying my first hunting handgun, Encore 7mm-08 15".
I would like advise on what scope mount to get.  I have spent a couple hours reading the posts on here regarding the various mounts, but i still need some help.  I was considering the TC Duo Ring system does anyone have any comments on that system, I liked the idea of having a rings integral with the base, it seems to be a good concept.
I am concerned that the scope will sit up to high on the gun and look silly.  I want my 1st Encore to look good and drive tacks!!
I am getting the Black grips on the blued frame.
Does anyone have any pictures of this mount? or others I should consider.
Seems like a lower profile mount would be more accurate?  The new encore ships to me in a few days and i need to let the guy know what mount system i want so it will be ready sight in right out of the box!!

any suggestions on factory 7mm-08 loads would be great too.

Thanks Guys this site has been a great help so far! My first hunting trip with the gun will be on Dec. 21  I will keep y'all updated. :-)

What I use. Both solid support from both rings.

Burris dual dovetail base and signiture rings.  Both rings are solid to base , rings self center and don't leave ring marks on scope.

or
Virgin Valley base and Warne QD rings.

:D  I am not paticularly fond of the Duo mounts.  They look okay but the integral rings are very close together and I have read that some folks have trouble with getting a good tight attachment to the barrel.   I have used VV steel mounts as well as the aluminum Weaver style mount.   I have found both satisfactory.   Rings, I usually prefer the Warne Maxima although the Burris Z rings work well.  I use the medium height ring.   Some scopes with larger eyepieces make it more difficult to cock the hammer without a hammer extension with medium rings.  I think low rings would really be a problem with the scope eyepiece.   There are pros and cons to the extensions also.   I have never had any trouble with them but some have.   If you are interested in photos--email me and will e-mail you some.     Ed

i'll second southern utah's recommendation. i have a burris dual dovetail base, and burris signature rings on my 15" 7-08 encore. they are good looking, hold the scope great, and the inserts prevent leaving ring marks on a good scope.
i've only shot a 2-3 boxes of factory loads, and havn't taken any game with them(used my handloads last season). they were 120gr rem hp's(green yellow box). they shoot fair out of mine. last outing with them i got around 1 1/2" groups at 100. when i first got the gun and shot them, some groups were around 3". so practice will help.
the very first thing you need to do, is get some stainless washers to place between the barrel and forearm. this will float the forearm somewhat, and keep the forearm from touching the barrel. this will more than likely help grouping considerably. this trick and practice took me from 3" grouping with this gun, to 1 1/2" grouping @100.
if you handload, try h4895 and 120-140gr nosler balistic tips. it will out shoot the factory load.
you might try hornady 7-08 light magnum factory ammo, loaded with 139gr sst's. havn't shot them myself, but they should be worth a try.
good luck, and keep us informed.   :music:   :money:   :D   :bye:

Thanks for all your help, It sounds like I cant go wrong with the Burris dual dovetail and signiture series system.

What do you mean by floating the Barrel?  I understand the concept -seperate the foregrip from the barrel so that the barrel will operate independently without interference from touching the foregrip -- but where do you put the washers? how many do you use? Just regular old washers from Ace Harware? I read one post where someone sugested a piece from a broken tape measure.

Thanks,

if you'll read all the post "bedding tc forends" it will answer every question you just asked. use washers. how many, depends on how much clearance you need. study up!
