p-95
« on: August 26, 2010, 04:47:17 PM »
My P-95 is very reliable bit I can throw a rock as accurate as i can shoot this gun.

I own other hanguns that I can shoot quite well. I have tried many loads.

Any thoughts.

That is some accurate rock throwing and must take some real practice.

What kind of groups are you getting and at what range?  Has anyone else shot the gun well?  Depending on how bad it is, you might consider sending it to Ruger.

20 rounds at 7 yards would not hit  a plastic water bottle. I had it surrounded. 5 rounds were from a rest, using a tree.

The sending to Ruger idea might be the best but shipping is a killer. I bought this used a while back for 200 bucks, I think.

It looked like new. I shout it for function only back then.

Hi....minute of water bottle is kinda vague.  Did you set up a target and shoot it at a discernable aim point??  I understand that you are unhappy with the accuracy, I would be as well, but a more focused aim point goes along way to supporting your argument with Ruger.

Also...the shipping thing??  I've shipped a rifle and pistol back to them with insurance...it cost about $22 each.

If you think it's a waste...sell it.......

I was aiming at the center of a filled plastic water bottle at seven yards. As I stated, the shots had the bottle surrounded.

Some high, some low some left and some right. Some were from a solid rest. I guess it would be about an 18 inch group.

With other handguns i have used the caps as targets  at the same range and they are easy to hit.

I thought FEDex wants about 80 bucks to ship a handgun. Next day air or something similar must be used by them. I assumed UPS was similar.

UPS just cost me $70 bucks also.  You cannot ship hand guns through USPS or face federal charges.  One thing I learned after the fact was my dealer told me that if I ever had to send one back, to bring it to him and he'd get a call tag and it would cost about 12 bucks!!!!  Oh, well, live and learn.  Hopefully, this info will help you to know how to do it.  Even if you take it to a gun shop and pay a $25 FFL fee for the day, it's still a lot cheaper.  ;)  Good luck man.

What grain weight are you shooting? My P-95 DC does much better with 124 or 147's than with 115 grainers. I use 147 Grain Golden Saber if I am serious about hitting something.

Pretty strange GS...should shoot better than that....I'd send it back for sure....

I checked again with my UPS shippments...I sent a Blackhawk in February and a #1 in June to Ruger.  Just regular UPS ground with insurance...was $22 and change for each.  Maybe has something to do with where you live??  I live in MA and the guns went to NH.

UPS now has a next day air only requirement for shipping handguns.  That way they said it wasn't in their system for any longer than necessary.  8(  An FFL can send them boxed normal though, which makes no sense to me.

I will slug the barrel this week. Online somewhere else, it was mentioned that some P-95 's have very oversized bore diameters.

My P95 is extremely accurate...  much more accurate than I am capable of offhand.  Have you called Ruger yet?  They usually have excellent customer service.  I had to send mine back in due to an ejector issue, and they sent me a UPS shipping label.  Didn't cost me a penny.  If you let them know how bad it is grouping, they may do the same for you.

You can ship your legally owned handgun by USPS to a gunsmith / factory.

About 3 months ago I sent a Contender by UPS to T/C and it cost less than $20.

Then you got lucky friend!  8)   From UPS website http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/packaging/guidelines/firearms.html?srch_pos=1&srch_phr=ship+handgun

Quote
Handguns, as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921,will be accepted for transportation only via UPS Next Day Air® Early A.M.®, UPS Next Day Air®, or UPS Next Day Air Saver® services. (Note: UPS Express CriticalSM Service is not available for firearms).

The charge is calculated by weight, so some guns will weigh less, but base charge is supposed to be 36 bucks IIRC.  Mine was $70+ for the UPS Next Day Air Saver Service®.  If your counter person knowingly puts it in a std. box or you don't claim it, there can be serious repercussions.  I wouldn't try to sneak past, because if it's improperly claimed and it disappears, you have no back-up.  Next thing you know, your gun is being used to hold up a store or kill someone and without proof, guess who they are coming to see...

I have a coffee can full of 147 grain cast bullet loads (unique) that are very accurate for a semi-auto.  Full clips into 3-4" at 25 yards are not uncommon.  My lighter loads are 122TC bullets....still pie plate groups at 25 yards.   At 7 yards, I'd stick with the rocks.

I've owned alot of ruger handguns  and out of them all I've owned three P-95's two of which I had the same problem as stated (couldn't hit the borad side of a barn), and the third shot good groups but it would hardly ever make it through a mag without fetching up. The P-95's are the only model I've ever had a problem with out of all the rugers I've owned. 3 out of 3 were bad, so no more will ever get eye's laid on again from me.

I wonder if it has something to do with a combination of bore diameter, bullet diameter and bearing surface of the bullets.

The american eagles were combat accurate.  I did not try them before do to their cost. There are about a buck more per 50 now.

I don't reload the 9mm. If I start i might try .357 bullets.

I want a 9mm that shoots decent with cheap ammo.

I had a P95 and had "fairly" good groups. The gun never really felt right when I gripped it and I found it too "clunky". Did you try shooting it from a good gun rest. If you do and get good results then it's you not the gun. I layed out the bucks and bought a Browning hi power. The sweetest shooting gun anyone could own.

My brutish P-90 is reliable and very accurate but my P-95 is finicky. I thought the Rugers would give similar results.

The p-95  might not be worth much in trade so it will spend most of the time in the safe.

I am looking at a 9mm conversion barrel for my Glock 23 to see how that works.

I have a friend, new to shooting that just bought a P-95.  We took it to the range and loaded it up.  I walked up to the 10 yd line and put the first three shots out of the gun in an inch!  We knew from that point on that any misses we made we not the gun's fault!  We shot Rem HB and even some Wolf ammo that day.  In fact, I believe it was the Wolf that we used for the first mag full.  It is a very accurate gun.  44 Man
