slugs through my double barrel??
« on: August 27, 2010, 03:32:56 PM »
I have a older savage fox 16ga. it is in real good condition and wanted to get some more use out of it besides just the handful of times i get out rabbit hunting with it each year. I was wondering if I could shoot slugs through it without any damage to the barrels. they are choked mod and full but not screw ins. what do ya think?

sure, the foster lead slugs will work fine in your old double as far as safety. Weather they will shoot to point of aim with both barrells is another question that only shooting the gun will tell you. Usually at least one of the barrells will shoot to boint of aim at 40 yards or so. Once in a while you get one that is regulated perfectly with slugs and will put both slugs at the point of aim at a given yardage but them of course they cross and print futher apart at a greater distance.  :o  welcome to the wonderful world of double shotguns. I really love them and have gotten used to their little quirks.

Finding the propper range is the biggest deal but I would start at about 30yds and move out from there. I had a old 311 that hit perfect at 40yds but at 60 the slugs had crossed and to far apart for honest hunting

My old French Made MAS SxS 16 gauge shoots brenneke slugs very well with both barrels hitting the same point at 55 yards, beyond 55 yards is where the barrels no longer shoot to the same point of aim, the improved barrel will still shoot to point of aim to about 70 yards, the modified barrel is toast after 55.  The SxS with rib in the middle actually makes for a really good sighting plane.

good luck and regards,

The Brenneke slugs were designed to be used in the "tight bore" European double shotguns and "Drillings" and usually shoot well. (The Brenneke's have deeper "fins" that can pass through a tight bore easier than the shallow grove "Fosters", or so goes the theory.) I have some shotguns that shoot Winchesters better than Remingtons or Federals and sometimes it is the other way around. I have measured the diameters of some of the available factory slugs and they seem to vary as much as "chokes" on most "straight tube" doubles. There doesn't seem to be any "magic" formula for matching slugs to a double, so if you find one that works in your gun out to your maximum effective range, record that load and count yourself lucky. You might try one of the "rib" rear and front sights from Tru-glow to help in the sighting department; they are easy to install and remove without tools.  (My 16ga drilling shoots a Brenneke POA at 75 yards and a 20ga Winchester, in a "sleeve" adapter POA at 50 yards!) Good luck!
