New AA hulls

I overheard a couple fellows talking about the new version of WW's AA hulls.  Seems the new version has a seperate base wad that allegedly has caused barrel blow up/bulges when it went part way down the barrel.  I'm wondering if any of you have heard whether this is true or if it's just empty talk.  I've been reloading them same as the original AA's---til now.  I appreciate your help.

Nope heard no such stories of that happening. I use the new AA HS hulls almost exclusively these days for skeet shooting. Of course I've only used 28 and .410 as I don't use the 12 or 20 for that any longer.

When Winchester first changed over to the "New AA" they had a problem with the base wad coming loose and moving.  I don't know if it ever caused any bulged barrels or not.  I am of the impression now that they have fixed that problem.  For more info on this you can go to Shotgun World under shotgun reloading as it has been discussed there extensively.

I use only the "Old Style AA" and STS hulls for my 12 and 20 ga reloading.

Any hull with a seperate basewad can experiance a base wad seperation.  I try not to use reloaded hulls with a seperate basewad in the repeaters.  I can visually check the barrel(s) on the break actions just incase.

Yesterday I did a search wia the www.  There's more info on this topic than I cared to read.  Differing opinions.  Supposedly the base wad moving problem was solved by WW, when, I don't know.  Guess I'll be checking the barrel(s) till all my older two piece hulls are gone and use those I've gotten in the last two years in future reloads.

Its a good habit to make of it to check for a clear barrel in between shots.  If its a single shot its easy enough to do.  On a repeater, you have to check the spent cases.  Remington 2 3/4 and 3 inch hulls are still compression formed and cannot have a seperation.   I wish activ still made hulls.

 I load about 40,000 12 ga shells a year almost all new style AAs, And have done so for the last 6 years. I've not experienced any basewad failures to date.

  Seems like a few years ago i read that the AAHS hull takes a different wad than the old AA. Not sure if this is true or not. I have a 5 gallon bucket of HS hulls i picked up at the range. No one shooting that day reloaded and they told me to take them. Not sure if i will ever use them but it would be interesting to know about the wads.

I wasn't aware they need different wads so I loaded mine with Winchester AA in pink and gray sizes.  Experienced no problems in loading or shooting.  (I've used the newer AA's for several years before hearing about the supposed problems with the base wads.)  What's a feller to do?

  Thanks ND. If i ever get around to useing the hulls i will use the same wad i have always used for the old AA hulls.
   The HS hulls are all 12 ga. and i have switched to my old Western Auto 20 for what little hunting i do.

The "New Version"  (AA-HS) is something like 10 years old now.

Use Winchester Wads made for the hull and you wont have any problems loading seating them.

If it were a problem (blows up guns regularly), you would have probably seen it happen personally by now.

Not all of the HS hulls are marked with the HS on the head. I have a bunch of the two piece hulls that are AA's and not marked as the HS. I have had these for a long time. Seems I remember it was at the time when they were switching over. Still have about 5K of the once fired AA's.
