Encore 45-70 - What cartridge???
« on: August 29, 2010, 02:47:10 AM »
Have an Encore 45-70 coming and wondering what cartridge to use.

Remington has a 300gr and 405gr Soft Point,

Winchester has 300gr Hollow Point,

Hornady has 325gr Ballistic Tip.

Any advantages to any of these cartridges?  (I don't do handloading anymore!)

I only use the 405 Remington.  The lighter bullets equal a .44 Mag.

1. What shoots well( group) for your rifle
2. The 405 Rems have the worst trajectory of all the rest you listed
3. Unless you love recoil( lots) :o stay away from some of those high pressure offerings made by some  smaller ammo makers.
4. Maybe re-loading is something to consider in you future

The 405 Remington is still going when the others run out of steam.

Re Rem 405 Factory load:
Depends on how much elevation adjustment you have on your scope ;D

I shoot the Rem 405 with a Weaver 3v scope, 2" spread all day long.

I don't doubt it, my "caveat" was directed at the ( howitzer) trajectory. :D ;)

You must have very different loading/ballistic programs then I have.
