balance, scope size vs rifle size
« on: December 03, 2003, 06:09:10 PM »
Still debating which scope to stick on a new rem model 7 in 7mm 08, will be doing a lot of shooting at dusk and with a spotlight for deer (legal on private property here in New Zealand), as well as long distance stalking.

I'm leaning towards a Zeiss conquest 3.9X40, within my budget, good optics and slightly lighter than an elite 4200. I've discovered I can also keep the weight down using the new low alloy Talley baseless rings.

I am concerned that this is a big scope for a smallish rifle. Will I turn it into a pig handling-wise by mounting a  3.9X40? It has been suggested to me that a varxIII 2.5-8x36 would be a better match for it size-wise but I'd rather have a slightly better scope (but not necessarily bigger) than this for low light conditions.

Any thoughts on this conundrum??

Thanks again

Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6. We have one on my wife's Rem. Model 7 in 7-08. I consider it a perfect match for the light rifle. You'll find it as good as it gets for the night shooting you're planning. That's why it is on hers. I put it there for a night hog hunt in Texas. Now she thinks it belongs to her. I had planned to put it on my R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 after that hunt but now she claims it is hers.

Another choice to consider is the Nikon Monarch 3x-9x-40mm.  It's ligher and shorter than both the Zeiss Conquest and the Elite 4200 (at least the 2.5x-10x-40mm - I'm not sure about the 1.5x-6x).

I tend to prefer the Elite 4200s a bit over the Monarchs, but if size and weight are a consideration, and if you want magnification over 6x, then you should consider the Monarch.  I own quite a few and I really like them.  I have never been disappointed.
