black chipmunk
« on: August 29, 2010, 11:11:30 AM »
Has anyone ever seen anything like this?  I've seen black squirrels many times but this is the first time I've ever seen a black chipmunk.   I saw him in the fall of 2009 while turkey hunting.  In the spring of 2010 while turkey hunting I saw him again.

Looks like a trophy one to me.

Saw a black-gray squirrel years ago up in WV.  Also saw a white/albino one there too.  My dad has a nice 8-point on the wall thats 75% white.  Never seen a black chipmunk though.

Looks too large to be a chipmonk.
I think you just got a pic of a small black squirrel.

I agree with McDuck, the tail is too long compared to body length. eddie

Tail looks too thin for a gray squirrel.  Proportions look right to me to be a chipmunk.

It was definately a chipmunk. When I saw it in the spring it was actually with another regular colored chipmunk.  Also, if you look closely you kinda see the stripes through the black.

Nope... but then again, I'd never seen a fox squirrel until one tried to share my stand one day in Alabama.  I thought it was some freak of nature and wanted to shoot it but since I didn't know what it was, I was scared that I'd get in trouble for shooting some kind of endangered animal.  Turned out they were in season then... I'm gonna get one on the wall some day.

OK, so either a really slutty Chipmonk went at it with a Black Squirrel and you have photo evidence of a new critter, maybe not species as it needs to breed to be a species.
Or you have photo evidence of a Chupra copris in daylight.  :o
Hey do you think the Chipmonk calls looking for child support and the squirrel tells his friends "you know those craazzy chipmonks once they go Black squirrel they never go back"?

This year my wife and me saw a really different downy wood pecker. The white feathers wher a dark grey. It was so dark it did not look like others of its species, A year ago or do we saw a junko that was  somewhat albio. That is, its coloraton was way lighter the 99.9 perecent of the birds of its scecies.

a few years ago I was sitting by a tree about 5 A.M. deer season, heavy leaf layer on the forest floor, saw leaves rustling by my foot, one black ground squirrel came out of the leaves and crawled up on my foot, he looked me over and went back into the leaves.
I asked a DNR guy about them , he said they're there, we just don't see them very often. :)
