I just don't get it. You guys talk about something, and the next thing you know I must have it...

I have a 22" .357 Magnum barrel on a .410 Tamer fame/stock that is used by my wife and kids when they want to tag along on a deer hunt. It is very barrel heavy and doesn't balance well at all, in fact my 10 year old daughter has to use a shooting stick with it. After reading up on the information here: http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com I decided that a 16" barrel would work great (16.25" to be safe). So, I dropped it off at the gunsmith yesterday for a $50 5.75" whack job and 11 degree crown. I'm also replacing the red dot with a real scope and moving the targets from 50 yards to 100.

My 10 year old daughter bagged this 275 lb. boar with it last year at 30 yards, right through the pumping station. A complete pass through using Federal Premium w/140 grain Barnes Expander bullets.

This is what it looks like now. 16.25" barrel and a Redfield Revolution 2-7X33, and I hope to add a range report tomorrow.

A really great thing to do with your kids

While it's at the gunsmith's have him ream it to Maximum.....you won't regret it.

Here's my 16.5 inch .357 max.

I asked, but he did not have a max reamer. He did say he was going to look and see if he could used a straight reamer that he had on site to lengthen the chamber, but that didn't sound like a good option to me... Maybe in the hands of a smith that might work, I don't know...

Rent the reamer from the forum and do it yourself. See the FAQs. Everyone says it is easier than falling off a log. The big thing is don't miss it. The Maxi really makes it a fun, versatile rifle......that's why I only have two.

From your Subject title I thought you knew my first wife!

Short Handi's are great and it will make it easier for the wife and kids to shoot. And if you follow Pete's advice and ream to Max your daughter should be able to do a double tap next time.

Be careful with that rifle.....While you're considering the Maxi, also keep in mind the limitations of that SB1 frame. It is all too tempting to push the Maxi real hard sometimes.

Note: I hope I'm not wrong, that is a SB1 frame, right?

Please tell your daughter we're all real proud of her. Having a 1 y/o daughter, I dream that she will follow in my footsteps and be a hunter too, unlike her mother. $:-\$

It is a SB1, but I don't currently reload and won't take it to a maximum until I start. I have some SB2 frames for when the time comes.

Heres mine in .223 that was cut by a good feller on here. I dont have permission to use his name but he did a fantastic job on it.
Its cut to 16.5 inches & makes for a great truck gun.

Your new shorty looks great! I bet it shoots as good as it looks. Your daughter is really going to like shooting that gun with the short barrel, assuming her dad gives her some trigger time.

BTW, I have 3 of the new Redfields and they all are working great, I think they are a good scope for the $$$.

FWIW the max used to be factory chambered on the iron frame.

FWIW, arent they cast STEEL, not iron, with the SB-2 forged steel?
Cast iron is too brittle to use as a gun frame.
Im pretty sure this has been covered ad naseum, and is the FAQs, but it keeps coming up.

SB1 is cast iron with no heat treatment, SB2 is heat treated investment cast alloy steel, this has been confirmed by my H&R contact.

Guess I should have checked the FAQ again as to the SB-2 being investment cast alloy, heat treated steel rather than forged, but I still have to question the cast iron vs cast steel (un-heat treated) part as cast iron is so brittle (in my experience, anyway), though I defer to your expertise.

The sb1 frame is plenty safe for the maxi up to listed max loads. Now there are some pushing the envelope. I think the listed max for aa1680 is 26.5 (with 180gr xtp) if memory serves me correctly and there are some folks shooting up to 30 grs. I would not recommend going over the listed max on the sb1 frame.

But up to the max she is sweet and will handle it with ease

By the way, Bayou Stalker glad to see some more handi folks close around. Great pic of a happy girl.
