My new .280 barrel
« on: August 31, 2010, 06:12:54 PM »
Well, I had this NU action laying around... and a member advertised a 280 barrel.... and Ben (Mechanic) just bought hisself one... and I've got a 7x57 and a 7/08 but no 280... and Pete sold his 30-30 barrel to someone else... soooooooo...   :-[

And it locked up on the action I have just like it was made for it!   ;D  I also had a spare set of wood laying around so now I have another complete Handi!   :D

But I'm done now...  :-\  No more... I'm finished...  ::)

Richard, I'm sorry, I didn't remember you were interested in the .30-30 barrel, or I'd have gotten in touch with you. :'(

My friend, neighbor, and manageing forester has a .280 Handi that I "accurazed" for him. (an "O" ring on the stud)  It's now a shooter/killer at 300 plus yards.  A great rifle, gotta get one.

Enjoy yours.

Pete

Not to worry Pete... Just remember, imported dark beer makes me forget all the injustices of life!   ;D

Anyway, I always wanted to try the .280!  Now I can! ;)

Richard old friend, I have a couple of .280's and I know you are going to grow to love yours. I have a full length barrel and my 19" .280 Remington "Thunderboomer". The 7mm's/.284 diameter calibers are great with a wide range of bullets to choose from. The .280 is one of those great calibers that just shoots and hits way outsuide of it's paper ballistics. Congratulations buddy, and enjoy.
Like you, I also have a 7x57 but I do not have a 7mmx08. I have been keeping my eyes open for a 7mmx08 Handi barrel but have not yet been in the right place at the right time for the right price. I have one in a BLR but not yet in a Handi. I even have my Remington Rolling Block in 7x57 (Thanks Marv!!) and still want to shoot a deer with that. I have grown very fond of the 7mm's because they simply perform so well....<><....:)

P.S. AtlLaw- I also have a 30-40 Krag that I still thank you for....<><....:)

I agree with Andy, the 280 is one of the best out there.  Like the 06 or 270, with the right bullet, it will take anything in the lower 48.  If it's "crunch time" and I still have unfilled tags, I grab a 280 to "getter done".  Sounds like you been infected with the 7mm bug too Richard.  Now, if you ever need to get rid of that 7X57, you let yer ol' buddy DP know ;), that's the one that got me started on the 7mm's and at this time, I ain't got one in the house. :'(  Enjoy it Richard, congrats on the find.  DP

Thanks guys!  I'm pumped!   :D  I've always wanted to play with this cartridge and now I'll finally have a chance!

I've got a couple of boxes of the old 162 gr. Nosler solid base bullets that I used to load in my 7/08 when I carried it as my back-up rifle.  If I thought they were good for anything I'd run into out of an 18.5 inch barreled 7/08, imagine what they'll do in a 26 inch barrelled 280!   :o
