What was your first bow?
« on: August 31, 2010, 06:18:32 PM »
Not wanting to hijack the thread about the all aluminum bow (several have mentioned having a Ben Pearson all fiberglass bow).
What did everyone start with?
I also have an old Ben Pearson fiberglass bow. It's a take down (sleeved) longbow with a double shelf & marked 45. My Grandfather gave it to me years ago & I've shot it a lot. I haven't shot it in years, but did build a string for it & strung it to make sure the string fit, but didn't shoot it. It'd probably be fine, but I don't want to take the chance.
I remember doing foolish kid things with it like shooting an arrow straight up in the air & seeing how close it'd come to us when it landed. I well remember the sared feeling when we'd loose sight of the arrow then wouldn't have a clue of which way to run or stand still. FOOLISH! It's a wonder any of us lived to reach puberty. Anyway that's how I started.

So if anyone is inclined I'd love to hear about your first bows.

My first bow was a Bear fiberglass longbow that was about 25# and had a shelf on both the right and left side.

Now my first hunting bow was a Bear 76er which was a takedown recurve with a metal riser and fiberglass limbs.  It was 45# @ 28 with a brown riser and green limbs.  I loved that bow and to this day don't know what happened to it after I joined the Air Force.  I've often thought about getting one of the used ones you see for sale, but it just wouldn't be the same.

My first bow back in the fifties was a lemonwood English style longbow. No arrow  shelf so had to be careful or edge of fletching from the arrow could inflict a rip in your bowhand.Got pretty good with it and knock down a couple of birds in flight. Later in college got my first recurve, a 45# fiberglass Ben Pearson, and a 50# Ben Pearson Palimino. Now I have a whole herd of longbows and recurves of Bob Lee, Rick Welch Dakato, and Chastain!

After my fiberglass Ben Pearson, my first real hunting bow was a Bear Hunter 48lbs. I still have an afinity for the Bear bows. Wish I still had that Bear Hunter.

A Darton maple/fiberglass recurve pulling 50 lbs @ 28".  When I was about 20, I traded it towards a Ben Pearson 60 lb takedown recurve, and then a few years later traded that towards a Ben Pearson 70 lb compound.  I still have the compound, but wish I had the recurves more.
