Question for Tim
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:12:34 AM »
Tim, I know you have your Handis in the basement, and that it is wet and humid in Washington.  You must have a dehumidfier down there.  If so, what kind and how effective is it?  I'm gonna have to do something similar pretty soon.  Patty doesn't want them in bed anymore. ::)  The problem I have is the pressure tank and plumbing sweat, adding to the dampness.

It's a Whirlpool Accudry AD25DSSO from Lowes, it had excellent reviews, a 5yr warranty and didn't break the bank at $130, it has a feature that allows a hose to be connected so it constantly drains to a floor drain in the basement so I never have to empty the reservoir, I have it set to keep humidity at ~55% which is slightly below the normal setting, normally it runs for an hour or two, then goes off for several hours, depending on the time of year.

Thanks Tim, I'm ordering one.  The nutty thing is when we were burning propane and wood, I had to run a humidifier on the first floor.  Now that we're on Geothermal, the basement stays damp.  The Geothermal heat and A/C keep the humidity normal on the first and second floors.

Thanks again,

Pete

Hey Pete!

My gun room is in the basement and I had to buy a dehumidifier also.  But it's so humid here it runs darn near most of the time.   :(  Had to replace the first one after 3 years +/- just a month or so ago.  Like Tim I got mine at Lowe's.

I have a hose that runs into the drain pump for the air conditioning units.  Believe me, I had to empty the reservoir at least twice a day before I ran that hose!  :o  Also like Tim I have mine set on 55% humidity but my humidity gage says it never gets down that low...   :-\

BUT!  Nothing rusts down there!   ;D

Hi guys!!

I also have a loading/gun room in the basement as well as most of the firearms storage down there as well. Mine is really dry but I run two dehumidifiers. One large one that like Tim's drains into the washing machine drain. The second, smaller unit is in with the firearms and I only run that one thru the summer months. Never a problem with corrosion.

Mine is also in the basement and no problems EXCEPT with the case colored frame.  That one wanted to start a little surface rust :o and the ones on either side were fine. ???  Hit it with EEZOX and cleaned it right up.  Did remove a touch of the case color though. :'(  This is the first time I've had a problem here in Montana, humidity is usually pretty low, even down in the single digits some summer days.  Been a wet year out here this year, raining again today off and on.  DP

Hello there,
I live at 5000" in high desert plateau in the middle of Az.  I run a humidifier in the house and have quite a bit of trouble keeping humidity up to 30.  Think I should run a hose to it?????
There are times I think I could make instant coffee powder by turning on the percolator and letting it set for an extra couple of minutes.

I have the same problem here, we run evaperative cooling to raise the humidity. outside it runs 10 to 45%. I once tried a rust bluing project, and had to put it in a plastic bag with steaming towels to get it started. DR

I have a condensate pump in the basement for the propane furnace and the geothermal that drains into the sewer.  I should be able to tie it into that line.

A year or two ago I finally built a larger wooden, lockable, gun locker in my basement. It is a dry basement anyway but here on Cape Ciod it does get damp and humid at times. The cellar is usually cool and therefore perhaps just a bit damper the the house but we don't ever have any dampness problems either in the house or the celler. I have installed rwo "Golden Rods" in my gunlocker and they work great. Prior to getting them I ran a small boxy (appx 5"x5"x7") "Pelonis" ceramic heater in my gunlocker. For about 10 or 20 cents a day the Pelonis kept the guns rust free. The Golden Rods are cheaper and don't dry out or heat up the interior of the wooden gun locker as much. I highly suggest running a Golden Rod style gun locker device in any enclosed gunlocker, they are cheap and effective insurance for your guns....<><....:)

What is this "basement" thing I keep hearing about?  You dig down over 12" around here and you will have a swimming pool.  I'm guessing you guys are more than my 15' above sea level...

You must be in northern Louisiana. In central Louisiana you only get down 6".

In Wisconsin we have hot & humid too, and this year especially bad. Get ANY dehumidifier and it will be better than none. About now is a good time to start looking as with heating season and humidifiers coming up the deHs should be going on sale. If you get one with the grain hose tap on the bucket and can run to a floor drain you wont regret it.
Ive found the key is to keep the basement closed up tight and start running the deH early so it can condition the space rather than try to catch up with an overly humid situation. +1 on the Goldenrods in the cabinet too. Dont leave the basement door standing open in the summer, it lets hot humid air sink down in and upset what youve just done. I think central air might be the answer if you duct it to include the basement, as AC is a dehumidifying process.

Weird! I live only ten miles from Puget Sound in Washington state. My gun room/reloading area is in my basement and in thirty years I've never had a humidity/rust problem. I will say though that I keep my basement well ventilated.  ???

I never said I had rust problems, not since I started using Eezox over 20yrs ago, but the humidity in the basement gets up to over 70% or so without the dehumidifier which I'm not comfortable with. It's humid enough that I've rust browned several barrels without a humidity box.

If ya lived here in the low desert{phoenix} you woundnt have too worry bout rust. But I do keep a small fridge in the the garage and it does run most of the time. As far as humidity levels,I keep mine pretty good with adult bevridges providing the proper viscosity levels. :)
