Favorite Load for 454 Casull?
« on: September 01, 2010, 09:14:28 AM »
Wanted to see what everyone's favorite hunting loads were for the 454.

Specifically wanted to see if you prefer JHP over Hard Cast for hunting deer.

I've got some Hornady 300 gr mags along with some 360 gr Cast Performance bullets and was curious to see others experiences.

Ain't killed anything but paper with mine, and always use cast bullets to do it with...300 grain bullets.
But then again, I shoot cast from all of my handguns. I save my $$ for jacketed bullets for my rifles.

Why such heavy bullets for deer??? When I carry mine I ike the 250 gr. Hornady mag. bullets with a full charge of H-110 or Win. 296.

Me? Because that's the mold that I bought for that cartridge. And maybe this year I'll get to kill a deer with it.

I use cut down 460 brass with the WLP primer.  For whitetail & mule deer a real good & accurate load is 10 grains of HS-6 behind a 340 grain hardcast and you'll enjoy practicing with that round all day long.  If you're going to be shooting in the next county over, maybe you'll want to bump it up some but otherwise it'll do just fine.

My 454 Casull load is a Hornady 300 gr XTP magnum over 30 grains of Lilgun. Speed according to Hodgdon is 1706 fps from a revolver. I shoot them in my 20 inch Puma and 13 inch Encore so I expect I'm getting a bit more. They're very accurate in both. I tried some 240 gr Hornady XTP mags but both guns seem to prefer the 300's. That's OK, I'll put the 240's in some hot 45 LC's.

I too use the 300 grain Lee cast bullet and 29 grains of Lil' Gun, but I believe that I like the 24 grain loads  a bit better. I'm getting too old for that thing. I wish I had my .480 back....

Using 29.0 grains of Lil'Gun with a 300 grain HC and WLP primer gets me a hair over 1,500fps out of a 6" barrel.  17.0 grains of N110 behind a 300 grain HC & the WLP is pretty accurate at just over 1,000fps and doesn't kick up the arthritis.  As previous stated - I'm using cut down 460 brass, so I'm able to use large pistol primers but velocities should be close.
