your first 45 auto

do you still have your first 45 auto ?

I have had my one & only ( COLT MK IV GOV. ) since I turned 21 so that makes about 25 years we have been together.

how about you guys ?

Yep...series 70 GM I bought new in 1984...sent to LaRocca Gun Works in Worcester MA for hand checkering 20LPI, burried bomar sites, ambi safety, extended beaver tail, beveled mag well, opened eject. port, ramp throat polish, action job, hard chrome frame, herrett skip check grips.  Like it was yesterday and still one of my faves!!

My "first" 45 was issued to me by Uncle Sam in the summer of '73.
Bought a series 70 GM in 1979 that still resides with me.  However it no longer bears much resemblance to it's original plain Jane configuration.

Yep, satin nickle 70 Series GM bought used July 1983.  Pretty much the way I got it externally, slight tweeking inside.  Oh, it's chambered for .45 ACP.

I honestly don't know how many Series 70 Colts I had, and wish I had them back. I'd sell them again, for more money! They were a great builder pistol, and Lord knows I built a few. No, I don't have the first 1911 I owned. When I finished them they were for sale to the highest bidder, and didn't usually take long to sell.

My first was a rattled out Llama that you had to wear gloves to shoot because the palm safety pinched skin and you were bleeding at the end of the range session.  I don't miss that one at all.

First 1911 thru more till i got a good one that cycles the way a 1911 should.

My first 1911 was a colt commander in 45acp.  It constantly jammed so i no longer have it.  My second 1911 was a colt goverment in nickel finish in 45acp.  It jammed all the time too plus both sites rattled loose while she was still brand new.  My third 1911 (yup i love punishment and wasting $$) is a springfield armory series 90 in 45acp.  it constantly stove pipes 1rd per 7rd mag.  I still have since its in black park and really purdy.  Mikey here told me its the mag which i purchased two CM mags for it but haven't tried it yet. The first two were life before the net. I had no info on how to fix them.

In my case the 4th time is a charm.  Number 4 was going to be my last 1911 if it didn't function correctly.  All this 1911 hype I hear how great they are and i can't get one to function properly.  Well #4 was a well used chinese norinco 1911a1.  This baby can function upside down if need be its that good.  It actually renewed my faith in how great/awesome a 1911 can be.  I was so happy with it i wanted another brand new 1911.  I went insearch of a low budget, cheap, affordable yet it had to at least empty the mag without a hickup.  I went browsing for a new S.A.M.  or a Charles Daly or an RIA and found nothing at any of my local gun shops.  But one shop had a stack of the new Auto Ordnance Army WW2 copy 1911a1's for just $389 at the time.  But he also had the springfield armory G.I. 1911a1 made in brazil with the key safety loc for $415 too.  I chose the new AO first and found it to be flawless for 500+ rounds now.  Being 1911 happy again i went back and grabbed the springfield armory made in brazil too but i haven't fired it yet. I'm stoked now about how great/awesome the 1911's are when we get ones that function properly.

My point is never give up no matter how bad it is.  You gotta get lucky sooner or later.  I only regret selling my colt gov 1911 in nickel finish it was the most awesome looking 1911 i have ever owned.  I traded it in for a new ruger redhawk in 44mag at the time when they were first offered.

My first .45 auto was a Thompson Ordnance Commander. I never grew too fond of it, so I sold it and got a Springfield Armory P9 (later EEA Witness). it was my true love until I got my hands on a SIG P220. The SIG and I have been together now for about 20 years and is my home defense .45.

My first one was an AMT Hardballer I got in 78-79 and a gunsmith friend of mine worked it over for me. It is the best shooting most accurate 45 I have ever shot, I plan to keep it till I die and then let my son have it. He loves it too and borrows it ever chance he gets. He just bought a S&W 45 yesterday and we will see how it compares to the AMT ;D

I bought a Colt series 70 in the mid 70's, had a smith in Iowa trick it out and it is one of my favorites. I recently bought a Kimber Ultra Carry II, that will not need the polishing. I carry the Kimber as a CCW, the Colt in my truck. I reload and niether gun has a feed problem with jhp or lead bullets. I would like to see some one make a jsp as they do in .429, we encounter some perps that are wearing multiple clothes in the winter. A fmj will do the job maybe, a 230+ jsp is a better option.

my first and only 45 so far is a argentine colt made in the 50's.im told it was argentine made on colt tooling loaned to them.fit and finish is very nice.but with the tiny sights it shoots 1.5 foot high with anything i stuff in it.i plan as soon as i find a competent gunsmith to have the slide inletted for target sights. as of now it has a ciener conversion slide on it shooting 22 lr.it is very accurate but is still bested by my buckmark.ill never sell neither.

I bought a springfield mil spec a few years ago to see what the big deal about the 1911 was. I now have a few more. :D

  My first and only is a colt WWI and i love it and still have it.  I bought it in 2004.  I always wanted one and will never part with it as long as i live.  It eats anything i shoot through it. Greatest gun ever made!

I still have my first, a 70 series Gold Cup National Match. It's still just like I bought it. All I have done is shoot it and it has never given me a problem. Not one.

    Regretfully I traded my first 1911....it was a Springfield Armory "Mil-Spec."  It was subsequently renamed the "GI" model. It shot all kinds of .45ACP ammo w/o any hiccups. I chose to trade it due to my aging eyes struggling with the crude sights and my other 1911's had no palm swell and switching from one to the other created a noticeable change in point of aim.....just thought I should standardize.  Despite my "logic" at the time, I miss that gun. .......Pete

mine was a p13 limited. very nice gun. got married and times got tough. walked into a gunstore with 7 high end guns and came out with $1000.wasn't happy with it but after 11 years of marriage it was a small sacrifice.

My first 1911 was a SA in .45ACP. I bought it sometime in the '70s...

It jammed about every other shot until I had the feed ramp polished and bought some aftermarket magazines. The GI style mags it came with just were not dependable.

 

It has had tens of thousands of rounds through it, mostly 230gr LRN cast lead over 4.5gr of Bullseye with the remainder either factory bulk buy 230gr jacketed hardball (mostly bought to get brass to reload) and my carry load, Rem 185gr Golden Sabers. It goes bang every time I squeeze the trigger. It is my go-to carry gun. I trust it with my life.

It ain't going anywhere.

RIA that I bought new for $318.00 with tax three years ago. Only things i have changed is a slightly wider safety lever and a pair of coral wood grips. I might put more visible sights on it one of these days. It is 100% reliable so far.

This is a timely topic.  :) My very first 1911 is a Springfield Armory 1911 GI Mil Spec I am going to use shooting Wild Bunch.  I picked it up yesterday and put 100 rounds through it this afternoon.  Nobody ever told me 1911s were so much fun.  Darn thing shoots better out of the box than my old Glock 17 ever did and is way more fun.

You are right the Mil Spec is plain jane without any of the fancy bells and whistles mentioned in this thread, but it is absolutely perfect for traditional style Wild Bunch shooting.    ;)
