New (used) barrel fitting...
« on: September 04, 2010, 04:33:28 PM »
So I got this barrel.  First...

1).It's a sloppy fit on both my breeches.  I shimmed the lug with two layers of coke can. Three won't fit.

2) There's still a light gap a can thick at the top of the breech and it still wobbles a bit with those two shims.  This is with NO forend installed.

Already read the fitting FAQs couple of times.  I'll be looking for a steel feeler gauge for permanent shims tomorrow.  I could use some help.

Second, how do I remove JB weld?

The barrel fitting info is pretty specific as to the steps to get it fitted, start at the beginning and work your way thru it with actual steel shims of different thicknesses, this is assuming the underlug hasn't been hacked on before you got it. ;)

Removing JB Weld is covered in their FAQs, grinding, filing or heating over 600º.

Sell it and buy something different... and hope it fits better.
Hold the barrel over a stove burner and heat up the JB... it'll come right off when it gets hot.

Did you remove the ejector/extractor before trying to fit it (must do so).
The gap 'at the top' tells me its not seating all the way down at the breach end fully into the latch. You need to figure out why.
With it latched up, when you push down on the release and feel the latch contact dragging to open, how much engagement are you feeling in there?

The ejector/ extractor doesn't have anything to do with shimming the lug... why would you remove it?

Gap at the top prob means the shims are too thick. Open and close the action firmly for a while, maybe shoot it a few times, the double Coke can shim will probably compress a touch. That happened on my .357. On the other hand, my 45-70 with one shim is going strong.

Spanky, with the extractor (especially) in place it is something else, another variable, in the way when trying to finely fit the barrel proper to the action. They are easy enough to remove, and it is just good shop workman manner to do so.

I don't understand how too 'thick' a shim could cause the gap?  Too thin yes.

Too thick a shim moves the barrel back too far for it to lock up, the lower part of the barrel will hit the breech face leaving a gap at the top.

Tom,

If you have too much metal in the pivot or too thick a shim the barrel will not fully close and you will have a gap at the top of the barrel/receiver interface.  If there is a gap at the top without a shim then you need to remove a very little bit of metal from the pivot on the lug.  Go really slow, it usually doesn't take much.  Follow the FAQs for direction on this.

If you have no gap at the top of the barrel/receiver but have a gap on the side of the barrel and usually some sideways play in the barrel then you usually need to shim to correct this problem.

Your goal with shims and metal removal from the pivot is to have the breech end of the barrel parallel and in contact with the face of the receiver.  Too much metal in the pivot area and the barrel cannot rotate all the way down and flush with the receiver face, gap at top, barrel touch receiver on sides (maybe) and bottom.  Too little metal in the pivot and the barrel will rotate past lockup with the receiver face, no gap at top, gap on the sides and bottom.

One other thing to check for is that the breech face of the barrel is square, this is discussed in the FAQs.  However, you must check for headspace with your ammo before trying to "square up" the breech face of the barrel as removing metal may cause headspace problems.

good luck,

BB

Thank you.  With one can shim the barrel is flush, but wiggles a tad.  With two can shims there is a gap.  So it seems I need about 1+ can thick shim.  I can do that.

You folks really got this covered.  I'm grateful.

I shim a 243 cal. barrel with .003 funny thing the J@B did not work but the Devcon 2 ton epoxy did the job
I used a drill bit and a wood clamp to set up the shim to the under lug for about 7 hours before setting into the action for another 12 hours (no problems)
I would check the sides after the case has been resized and see that both sides and top are equal I have mine set up that .001 will not pull out when the action is closed and a empty cased resized:

AH HA...shimmed with one piece of can and two layers of alum foil.  Breech-barrel lockup is a no pull out fit on one layer of alum foil.  Problem solved I guess.

Until next time... thanks all.
