Stubbing a .32? Help
« on: September 05, 2010, 05:53:58 PM »
Could a Moisin-Nagant barrel be stubbed to 1 .419 barrel to make a .32 rifle? What would it entail?

Been a few posts about this, here's one might give you some idea as to what is entailed.  8)

You want to take a Moisin-Nagant barrel and stub it to a NEF receiver...is this what you're talking about.

What is the 1.419 number in reference to?  That lost me totally.

I don't know the shank diameter of the M-N barrel and I wouldn't use a barrel of questionable metalurgy or bore condition, but that's me, I would start with a new 32 cal barrel, but if you have a lathe, using a take-off M-N barrel would be an excellent, down and dirty, quicky...if you have to pay a machinist, that's a horse of a different color.

ANY good 'smith or machinist could do all the metal work, it is nothing but straight forward machine work.

Cut the stub receiver just in front of the lug or a little farther depending on if the donor NEF barrel is a HB or has a tapered barrel, bore/ream/thread the stub, turn/thread the barrel, screw in and headspace.  You could match the M-N threads to the NEF stub or pick whatever threads you like.  I use 20 TPI for my switch barrels and stub receiver.

I have used cheap Savage barrels to make switch barrels on a Ruger action several times...it's not brain surgery to do this sort of thing.

Because the barrel is already chambered all the measurments must be spot on.

I have a new mfg M-N.  It shoots well enough for a quasi-military weapon with open sights and the ballistics aren't all that bad either.  Comparable to a 300 Save, 303 Birt or 308.

Luck

Not quite a .32, but I have a Ruger No.1-B, 30-06 barrel that would make a nice stub job (in the classifieds or PM me). Ive read that some (?) .32 H&R Mag barrels are that dia., but cant verify it. For that matter, a .314 isnt a .32 either.
I dont know if .32 Mag case run into a .30 M1 carbine die  would work (anyone, any thoughts?), but if so it would make a dandy rimmed case .30. that would be easy to live with and a twist that will stabilize heavier bullets or sub-sonic velos.

I've made up a half dozen or so using surplus British 303 barrels.  Several 32 H&R Mags, one 327 Mag and a batch of 32-20's.  The Russian barrel has a lot of slots and holes cut in the outside so it would not be as easy to work with.  Larry

I guess I didn't proof read my typing the first time. I meant a .410 barrel I have a shotgun that I would rather use as a .32 rifle. Probably chamber for .32 H&R Mag. I find that M-N barrels are fairly cheap, but am not a brain scientist about the ins and outs. If the barrel is already threaded, do I just thread inside the sacrificial stub to match? I think that is what was said above.

My 32-20 Trotter Special is made using a 410 stub.
I would suggest using a 303 barrel instead of a mosin barrel. The one I have is made using a 303 barrel and it shoots extremely well. With Mosin barrels you never know what bore size you're gonna get until you slug it. The 303 barrels seem to be more consistent.

You cant just thread the 'stub' I.D. and turn the rifled barrel in as they have a chamber existing that you have to cut off, unless that chamber is what you want. The neck/throat can often be left, and on some maybe a bit of the shoulder of that original chamber, if it will 'clean up' with the proposed new cal. reamer.
Your new barrel will then have to be faced and threaded to match the stub and enough extra to get the action fitting and headspace. See past details of this process on this forum and the FAQs, it is well worth the look into. Any qualified machinist and/or gunsmith can do this , but someone who has already done some and has the learning curve and tooling done will probably be a wise choice. The big advantage of sending out barrel work is that no FFL is required and shipping is about $10 each way.

On gunbroker, go to rifle parts, barrels, search for smle and you will find some $35.00 32 cal barrels.  They have nice fat lands and seem to really love cast bullets.  Larry

How about we twist some arms, or beg , wheedle and cajole, or get up the 200 + orders we need to get a run made? I will be happy to purchase the 1st one, make it one of those Talo shorties with a handi-grip stock. It would be the neatest small game and plinking round since the 22.

H&R doesn't offer a bore in that size, so the minumum would be 500 rifles and it would have to be ordered by a distributor, 250 is the minimum for a standard bore they already have.
