Ruger your Killin me - I keep savin pennies hopin for my perfect .357 Single six

I really like the look of the Ruger Montado's Lower , wider Hammer But never purchased because

1. Barrel was too Short for my liking. (3.75)
2. Blued option was not available.

Now I see Ruger has produced a SASS version. It has incorporated the Montado's lower wider hammer and barrel length is much better (4.62) But again ......

2. Blued option not available.

I would be a happy camper if Ruger would just offer the Lower wider Hammer as an option on any one of their products in .357 caliber .that was Blued.

Oh well , I'll keep savin my pennies and waiting.

  .357 in a Single Six huh?  Good luck with that!   I've seen a .41 special but even then pressures need to be kept at a minimum. Not going to take the .357 pressures in a Single Six package size.
 
  As for the hammer dilemma...try and get the part # for the Montado hammer and have a gunsmith order one.  While they won't seel such "fitting required" parts to anybody, I do believe they will sell them to gunsmiths.  Another option is to reshape a SBH hammer a slight amount.

If you want the hammer, it's just the Super Blackhawk hammer.  I got one from my gunsmith for under $30.  I keep it in my parts drawer.  When I get a Ruger I like, I put it on.  When I am ready to sell it and move to something else, it comes off and goes back in the parts drawer.  I too would like a blued gun from Ruger, but mine needs to be the short barrel of the Montado, blued, and with a round butt.  Guess I'll let Ruger know that!  Buy a blued .357 New Vaquero in the barrel length you want and install the SBH hammer.  Enjoy.  44 Man

actually John Linebaugh did make one single six in 357 mag so it can be done in a 5 shot. I had a 41 special single six from galagher but found it more of a novilty gun then a gun i wanted to use every day and it was sold to boge quinn. Bottom line is its alot of money for a gun that isnt all that practical. I too though am not a fan of that new UGLY ruger hammer. I allways wonder why they even produce them with it and why they dont use the super hammer in all of there guns. I would have to guess its a lame attempt at making them look like a colt.

I guess I need to be educated.  Isn't the .357 "single six" called the .357 Black Hawk?  They have the same frame.  The grips are interchangeable.  I don't know how many trigger parts are identical, but I'm willing to bet a bunch are.  Any other differences would be those required between the two calibers (barrels, cylinders, upper frames).  When I shoot my single six and Blackhawk, it's like shooting the same pistol, except the BH has a wee bit more recoil.  Full house .22 mag doesn't breathe as much fire as full house .357.

Now a single six 38 special 5 shooter with a shorter barrel and birds head grips would be an interesting piece wouldn't it? I tried the 32 cal single six, but I couldn't shoot it very well, and it was neither fish nor fowl so I let it go.

Since 72/73 the SS(single six) and the BH (blackhawks) have used the XRN-3RED frame for the New Models.  These replaced the XR3-RED frames.
http://www.gunblast.com/Hamm_Ruger-SA-GripFrames.htm.  The only frame differences I'm aware of is the changes for the infernal lock.  Below are the NM BH .357, Super Single Six and NM BH .45 Colt.  Frames are the same.  Grips are interchangeable, even on the .45 with the infernal lock.  If you want a single six in .357, it's called the NM Blackhawk .357.  



I did a bit more reading.  Ruger parts identify the grip frame and cylinder frame as separate entities.  My Single Six manual has a part number for the cylinder frame.  The Blackhawk manual mentions cylinder frame, but doesn't have a part number.

So, if the different size "frames" are "cylinder" frames, yes the SS frame is smaller that the BH frame.  However, to convert a SS cylinder frame to take .357, you'd have to lengthen it and beef it up.  I could probably do that by putting the .357 cylinder frame on the SS grip frame.  In other words, if you want a SS in .357, buy a .357 BH.

sorry for the confusion....i was speaking of the cylinder frame, the single six cylinder frame is smaller than the NMBH frame. The grip frames are the same, but the cylinder frames are not. The only way to get a 357 mag on a single six frame is have it done by a custom gunsmith
