30/30 bullets in 30-06
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:03:15 PM »
Can you duplicate 30/30 loads in a 30-06? I would like to use the extra 150 and 170 grain 30/30 bullets in my 30/06 and load them under 2000 fps. Anyone try this?

If you search for trail boss loads, some guys are loading the .30-06 with this with some luck.  8)

Yes you could. I'd try H-4895 and 30-30 bullets at the reduced velocities.

I'm doing this with H-4895 and Rem bullets(22774 CX), the interesting thing is that those loads still cycle through my Rem 742. The recoil is minimal.

I see that Hornady lists a load for their 150 grain 30-30 bullet (#3035) with two powders I have on hand, Win 760 (47.9 grains) and IMR 4064 (44.2 grains). Both loads are estimated to shoot 2500fps. I'll let you know how they work out!

If you can get hold of some H4895 you can go as low as 30.6 gr with a 150 gr bullet.

Been there-done that. Works great (I used IMR 4895). Run the velocities on up and they make wonderfully explosive varmint bullets.

My old Speer #10 manual gives reduced load data for 30-06. For the 150 gr SR-4759 start 20.0 grs 1650 fps, Max 24.0 1957 fps

It gives data for 180 gr bullets but you could use it for 170's. IMR 4198 start 26.0 1723 fps max 30.0 2000 fps.

Yes it works.  I shoot a cast bullet from WWs with a gas check.  I size these at .309 and lube with Lyman lube. I use  760 powder under the lead bullet.  The 150 flat nose is running 2200 Fps.  These are bombs on prairie dogs out to 200 yds.

Speer lists a couple excellent loads for 150 and 180 gr jacketed bullets that keep the velocities under 2000 fps.  Try 26 - 28 gr of AA5744 under the 150s and 26 - 30 gr 4198 under the 170s.

I use a -06 reduced load with 150 gr. jacked bullets that I found in an old american rifleman article on reduced loads:  35.0 grs. of 4198 (either IMR or Hodgdon will do).  very accurate.

Here's what a 150 grain Sierra 30-30 bullet will do with 42 grains of IMR 3031:
