CVA Big Bore Mountain Rifle
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:03:18 PM »
Greetings - This is my first post in the ML section of greybeard.  My wife and 11 year old son called the other day saying they found a big bore mountain rifle kit at a yard sale for $45.  I told them to buy it immediately.  When they got home, I checked it out, and everything is intact as it came from the factory, with a couple exceptions.  The kit is a percussion model, with the nipple drum already fit to the barrel, however, the lock is a flintlock (not even a CVA lock, it resembles an L&R Durs egg lock, but I am not sure if that is what it is), and the double set trigger is not the CVA variety.  The CVA trigger is designed so the tang screw from the barrel threads into it, tying everything together.

For my son's first muzzle loader, I think it's best that he build the kit as designed, without trying to modify it to fit the alternate trigger and lock (not to mention the mods to the barrel to convert it to flintlock.  I also think shooting a percussion would be less complicated than a flint.

When I was a kid (about my son's age), my dad and I shot muzzleloaders all the time (2-3 times per month, plus a monthly competition at the club that we belonged to), and I think it would be great to do the same with my son (and with my dad when he visits).

My son and I already do a lot of shooting modern guns (.22, .380, .243, .308, 7.62x54, .17HMR), so shooting is not foreign to us.

I am looking for some advice as to what to do with the kit and the incorrect parts.  I plan on calling Deer Creek Products tomorrow to see if the parts are available.  Based on my limited description, is that the best way to go?  Is there a market for the lock and trigger if I were to post a for sale ad here on GBO?  Is there a possibility of trading someone on these boards the correct parts for my parts (I know, that's a long shot)?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Tim

Percussion would certainly be the better way to go for someone new to muzzle loading.  Here's a link to a complete CVA percussion lock for $60.  8)  Good luck and hope he enjoys it!

Tacklebury - Thanks for the link.  I did end up ordering the lock and trigger from Deer Creek Products.
