Quick Clot-does it work, and how well?
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:20:23 PM »
There is a blood clotting agent called Quick Clot.Originally developed for the military.
Has anyone used this product, and how well does it actually work?
I can envision several scenarios where it -might- be helpful e.g.
compound fracture,knife/axe/gunshot wounds, etc.;also for use around a shop or kitchen.
Thanks.

It's my understanding that it will burn the surrounding skin ie tissue damage so there should be a real need before use.
"Blood-Stop" from an animal supply dealer is only $14-15 and works fairly well.  I used a lot of it while dehorning cows/calves, with minor direct pressure, tearing of the artery and blood stop, arterial bleeding was pretty easy to control on the smaller arteries feeding the horns

Quik Clot does work very well. If excess water is present on the wound site an exothermic reaction can occur that might cause 2nd degree burns. QC works by pulling water from the blood at the would site and leaving behind the other stuff to help for a clot. This is why it is important to wipe away excess water and use only as much QC as is needed.

I watched an episode of dual survivor. All you need to do is dump black powder on it, and light. Walaaa all done. Oh and dont forget the moss to cover it. ;)

I just had the opportunity to use a product called Surgicel Absorbable Hemostat, by Johnson & Johnson, and it works very well.

It says "prescription only" and came as an office sample from a PA.

Cut myself pretty good last year sharpening my hunting knives. I had a pack of Blood Clot and used it with good results.  Next week I got the knives out to finish sharpening them and had to use it again.  :o  Now I store my knives WITH the Blood Clot.

I can see admiting it once, but I dont think I would admit it twice ;D .

Guess I do need to try that stuff. I am always busting knuckles open or cutting myself at work. I bleed pretty good, freeks people out :o  I do use super glue on cuts on occasion. It really does good when you have dryed split skin in finger joints.

I have the same problem with banging up various parts of the hands and arms.  Taking a baby aspirin every day tends to interfere with clotting.

I jammed a sharp object between the knuckles at the base of the fingers and not only put a nice gash, but at an angle that made a flap of skin.  The "butterfly" style bandaids are a blessing, as well.  There is a product called by several different names like "Liquid Bandage", which is mainly Superglue and works very well for some injuries, after stopping the bleeding...as was said.

Oh YEAH! Liquid Bandage and Quick Clot - I Love them.

You can buy the Clot stuff in one time use packages instead of the monster sized military I bought for my office. The small ones (Walgreens, Rite-Aid) work on my usual finger notching and head butting a rafter episodes. And Liquid Bandage has become a permanent fixture in my Field first Aid kit.

I tried super glue but it burns worse than the liquid bandage which burns plenty for me.

One drawback is that it is expensive and has an expiration date. Some of the stuff you see on line is expired or getting ready to expire.

My Surgicel was two years past expiration date and still worked okay.  Not recommending anyone else use it like that, of course... ::)

Quick clot works well.  It is not for boo boos, however.  As I was trained, it is designed to stop arterial bleeding where a tourniquet can't be applied.  For best use it takes several people to apply: one to control bleeding initially (squeeze the cut artery), one to spread the wound to allow direct access to the artery, and one to dump the powder/stuff the gauze.  Any of these people or additional persons need to be prepared to apply direct pressure for several minutes.  If you plan to rely on this, or any emergency product, please get training in its proper use.
