What's Your favorite For Squirrel Hunting?
« on: September 07, 2010, 04:48:13 PM »
What is your favorite caliber for squirrel hunting?
I like a .22 caliber rifle if the leaves are gone or at
least thin, and a 12 gauge shotgun if leaves are still thick.

Kindly,

If shooting squirrels only, .22 short all the way.  If I'm in an area with a supply of rabbits/grouse/pheasant, I'll often carry a .410 single and have my .22 handgun on my hip for bushytails when presented.  I LOVE eatin grouse and pheasant, so if the opportunity presents, I take.  ;)

I use a 12 most of the time for safety concerns, i don't like the idea of sending bullets skyward.
But, i like the .22 the most and use it in remote areas far from homes. I found that i could shoot well through leaves with it.

I alternate between a scoped Marlin 60, a Model 92 Winchester clone in 357 mag, in which I shoot a very light loaded cast in a 38 special case. Not much range as the velocity is only about 600fps, but it will take a tree rat right off the limb, and a 12 gauge.

I just 22ed one in my back yard out of one of my paper shell pecan trees. I let Huff have him since he treed him and kept him treed until I finally heard him. Ole Huff is one dedicated squirrel dog.

The only rifle of mine that has drawn blood in years is my Remington 582 that my Dad bought in the late 60s.  A rifle that has no right to be as accurate as it is after the abuse I put it through as a kid.  I've taken two squirrels with it in the last few years, both from my attic (and I ate them).  I hope to get to the woods soon though and make my Contender pistol my favorite.  ;D

36 cal flintlock southern rifle is hard to beat, but occasionally I revert to an old Remington 510 single shot .22 or an Iver Johnson Champion single shot .410.
You can ruin a squirrel hunt with by using them modern fancy shootin sticks. ;D

Have not hunted only for squirrels for a long time, but this is what I plan on using next time. It's Thompsen-Center TCR-83 with a barrel in .17 Hornet. The load would be 15-grain Berger hollow points at 3,900+ fps.

I have long preferred a rifle or scoped pistol sniping head shots to a shatergun at limb hopping rats.

A couple years ago I finally found a nice enough Savage 24 in 22/410 and took it home. Now it's bar far my favorite for bush and cotton tails.

stevens crackshot. have my grandpa's. it fed the family and probably killed more game than i have ever seen. oh and 22 shorts. they will knock one out of the tree better than higher velocity rounds that are more apt to just pass through. head shots only was the rule, and only shoot if they would fall clear.

12 ga  H&R Topper single shot with #4 lead shot mainly if seriously hunting. When I used to live along a river I used everything from a .22 Short to .38 revolver.

.32 cal flintlock, or Beeman .22, or Beeman .177.  Really depends on the mood of the day.  Before Ky changed the laws the list would also include my .22 Hornet ;)

Around here, the "leaves" are always thick for some tree species.  We're all in pine.  There are aspens, but I can't ever recall seeing anything other than a grouse in an aspen.  The 12 gauge gets time, and mainly took all of last season.  The NEF Sportster will get some time this year.

I hane not lived where I could hunt squirrels for quite a few years, but when I did I generally used a 22 rifle. Sometimes a shotgun.  ;)  If I ever live where I can squirrel hunt again I'd like to try a muzzleloader.   :o
