Tapping shot gun for scope
« on: September 07, 2010, 05:41:09 PM »
I was going to have my sons .410 tapped for a scope and add a red dot to shot slugs at close range. How hard is this to do yourself and get it right? What is cost

My thought is probably not a good idea.  In many .410's the barrels aren't thick enough to keep strength once tapped.  If it didn't come tapped, I'd probably look for a solderable base that doesn't require perforation of the barrel material.  8)  What model are you looking at?

It is a Rossi .410. We bought it for him for a first gun. A few years ago. When he was like 5. 12now  but he is really small framed and skidish when it comes to bigger guns and kick. I'm looking for a .357 or 44 for my NEF shotgun frame but ya know how hard that is to come by.

If it is the Youth 410 Rossi on the small frame then there isn't much chamber thickness to tap into.  Also, the barrel on these is pressed into the rear part that has the hinge and latch built into it.  I know because I machined one out and made up a 22 Hornet barrel on one.  This is the one gun I would probably not try to drill and tap for a scope.  If you still want to try, a Contender scope base has the right contour for that barrel.  For a light weight red dot scope, you may be just fine if you take care and sand up the base and the area just under it and use some JB weld to put the base on with.  Normally I don't think glue is the way to go, but this may be the exception.  Larry
