my dear scottish friend

is that one of the scottish haggis boilers on wheels , or what ??

it sure aint a ships carriage or a mortar base  ;D
I dont have any wheels on my stove  :'(

zulu
if you are going to make one of this models be sure that you understand the elevating mechanism first
it aint anything fancy, but on the barrel drawings the hook to attach the rope is put in the wrong way
it should of course be at the bottom of the barrel and not at the side
they didnt use different wiews on the drawings back then so they need to get it visible in another way  ::)
stupid ?? yes with todays standards it is , but they didnt know any other way to do it back then

but they are over 300 years old , so some engineering liberties we got to tolerate

it's very kind of you to tell zulu about the mistakes in those drawings Dan , it would add weeks onto a build and give the maker a lot of problems if the poor man was left to think that they were accurate.

I guess that you know by now how inaccurate they can be  ;D
when I first started to search for info on old drawings I had hughe problems to understand the way they used to show meassurements on the different parts and that they sometimes was more artistic sketches than an accurate technical drawing .
so everything must be checked and calculated over and over again
but at least they provides some good info when it comes to proportions

one seriously good thing about those and any of the old drawings , you soon learn to check and check again before cutting anything. you can get your dimensions from proportion to the barrel , a lot of measuring but you're learning all the time before even starting to build. If you haven't got a barrel to build to................would make it much more difficult........... a barrel with good size trunnions would be a lot easier.

Keep in mind that the mortar bed on the right (with the rounded shoulders) in the period photo may be a unique design, because (as far as I know) there's no other record of that type being used, while the two other bed designs seen in the picture are well documented.

I forgot about this coehorn and bed (that makes two of this type bed that I know of); that's an original bed that was undergoing conservation work when these photos were taken.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

carronader  -  Sorry for the delay to your offer of Euro designs.  If you have more than what you posted by pdf I would gladly accept them.   I've been a bit busy with travel for work and trying to stay on top of college courses at the same time.

everyone else, thanks for the help so far.

Well I'm back.  I've made most if not all the changes discussed.  Opened up the bore a bit, narrowed the powder chamber so its not square, made the trunnion 1" dia, and shortened the bore just a bit to keep my Factor of Safety above 7 for Stainless Steels.  Pressures for calculating FoS are based on previously linked data for the largest pressures which are made from more powder than will fit in my design.  So I'm conservative on my conservative design.  Will get pics of computer model up soon.

Two suggestions.
One, round the corner where the drilled in the powder chamber (where the bevel intersects the cylinder ID) to reduce the stress risers.
Two, drilling into the bevel is a great place to break the bit.  Move the hole forward just a whisker.

I've done most of mine in AutoCAD before I turn a chip.  LOOKS GOOD!
