record black bear ??
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:43:51 AM »
OK guys, can anybody tell me if a 1200+ pound black bear has ever been taken in Alaska? a co worker was telling me last night that a friend of his killed this 1200+ pounder either last year or the year before. Is this guy yankin my chain or what? I want to be sure to have all my ducks in a row.
 Thank you, John

Sounds like chain-yanking to me!!

If so that bear must have been on steroids.

Largest Blackie on record that I am aware of weighed around 800 and something LBS taken in the Carolina's about 10 years or so ago. (I forget exact figure). Largest ever taken in New England was a bit over 600 lbs.

Thanks guys, last night I checked into some of the record books, the world record is 880 pounds taken in one of the Carolinas.
I think this guy would rather tell a whopper than the truth anytime, or everytime.

The American Bear Association,
What is the record weight of an American black bear?
The world record weight for an American black bear is 880 pounds. This was the recorded weight of a 10.75 year-old male bear shot in North Carolina in November 1998.

Wow that record blackie was BIG.  I'd bet a lot of Alaskan grizzlies and even browns aren't that big in spite of all the tales. I think a lot of those eastern black bears in PA and so on can get much bigger than many of our Alaskan blacks - richer food supplies and longer feeding season.

For a long time, the world's record black bear was taken here in New Brunswick 2-3 hrs away from me. It was between 800 and 900 pounds, but it was not registered "legally" for some reason. I think the guy hit it with his car, or shot it out of season, or waited too long to weight it officially, or something like that.

That Carolinas bear might be bigger.

A 736 lb. bear was taken near Bowler Wisconsin this week. It's marginal bear country but near the indian res. Indians don't believe in shooting bear because grandpas spirit is in there so there are lots of bear in the res. and just outside of it. This may be the bear.

Two bears shot in Wisconsin this year. One was 736 lbs and one 711. The 711 lb was shot by a kid in Price co. Wis. and was 660 gutted.
