REMINGTON SPEEDMASTER
« on: September 09, 2010, 04:26:58 PM »
What would be the general response to a Speedmaster with either a 4X Nikon or 6X Pentax scope on it?

A-1 Hunting and Shooting Supply---also know as my FFL person---is touting a discontinued Pentax 6X for about $85 and says her husband liked his better than the Nikon,
The Nikon at about $220 is a nice unit---and it is hard to drag me from their spec sheet.
Personal opinion is a good thought though.
The Speedmaster is a given though.
Since I started this quest for my Grandson, Jack, a present to be passed on---I have rediscovered the old love of shooting a .22---I mean just shooting holes in paper.
I got him the Belgian Browning---but I don't want to scope this beauty. Soon as he is off the bottle, I am threatening to take him shooting.
The Speedmaster is getting the call for a plinker.

William,

I was looking for a new pair of binocs last year and the guys on 24hr campfire sure recomended the Pentax. Thats what I bought and they sure are nice. I've never used one of their riflescopes but I would try one based on my experience with their banocs.

I know I don't really like the Nikon riflescopes I've owned or that friends have on their rifles. I think thats odd too because I like their camera lenses, just not their sporting optics.   :o

If it is for you to use for a while get the 6X you will be happier.
If it is for the kid then get the 4X.
the wider field of view is better for kids to find targets.
I have heard good things about the Pentex.
I purchased a Weaver 4X38 for my plinker 22 Mag and am really happy with it.
Although a 2.5-7X32 Would be a good choice too.  Nice compact low profile scope and the small bell allows for low mounts.
As the Speed master was sold wiht iron sights the stock angle is going to be low.

I have concentrated on the 4 power--side by side the 4 power is better for my eyse. I have not looked at 6 power.
Right now I am  seriously considering a Leupold VXII 4 12X50.
It may be overkill but it seems that--reading, listening, thinking--in the long run, without looking back--this series has all that i could want.
Opinion?

You are correct about the leupold being overkill but I have some 3 to 9's on acouple of my rim fires and I like em.  I have never had a parallax problem using one on a rim fire.

My only concern is the 50mm Objective.
It means you are going to have very high rings for that little rifle and your cheek weld is going to be loose and you may not get the accuracy of a 32 or 38mm Objective.
Leupold makes a very nice 2-7X33 that would fit the lines of the rifle in a Var X 1 and II and even the rifleman series.
Just cause it goes to 2X does not mean you need to use it.
Dial it to 4X and leave it there and use the 5,6, & 7 when you need or want them.

The Nikon Prostaff 4X or 2-7X32 would be great.  The Speedmaster is a great little rifle.

I may not have made my self clear on what makes perfect sence in my pea brain.
Look at the stock of the speedmaster and the stock is rather low to the bore so you can look down the sights.
If the rifle were set up as a target rifle the stock comb would be a little higher so you look down then center of the scope rathern, an inch or an inch and a quarter higher than the sights.
With the lower stock, mounting a large rign scope will move the center of the scope higher and you will be shooting in a heads up position with your Jaw on the stock and not your cheek.
As the Jaw is a movable part and the cheek is not.  You may not get the same placement of your head every time on the scope and with the jaw movable you will not get the accuracy out of the rifle as you would with your cheek on the stock.
You can add a strap on stock pad like the ones on the M1 D rifles but they do a numer on the finish of the stock.
If you want a quick excersize to prove this take your shooting hand.  Place the top of you thumb against your cheek bone and look down your index finger. (pretty steady)  Now move your thumb to the bottom of your jaw. Your finger will move if you move your mouth any your finger moves.
William,
If your shooting against me in a Match, get the big scope.
If you want to have fun shooting bottle caps, potatos, empty shotgun hulls, and small game.  Get the lower scope or get a rifle made for the larger scopes.
The place me head fits on my 2 CZ 452 rifles for example.
The Lux with open sights has me looking strait down the sights
The Varmint model has my head much higher when I was not looking down the barrel but  about 1.25 inches above it.  Allowing me to mount a 40mm optic on it easily.

Dang you Bill now you'ge got me looking at Speedmasters.  When I was a boy my dad gave me one which I foolishly traded for a .410.  I'm gonna have to get one.  Mine will get a 2-7X32 Nikon Prostaff.

Dang it all---this is addictive.
Alright--I am convinced to some degree, well at least to the point of examining another solution.
I like good, sharp controls.
The pro-staff seems to fit but most find it not a user friendly scope---sighting and such.
Where are we going with this conversation---I admit to prefer good stuff that works well and last. I am not trying to throw money as a solution -- but you get my drift.
Good--GOOD conversation.
i am learning.

I bought a Speedmaster in 1961, when I was 16...I used it a few years with open sights and then put a 1.5 x 4.5 Weaver on her...I killed a truck load of squirrels with that combo before the scope gave up the ghost...That size scope without the bell on the objective end just seemed to look right on that gun...I use her with open sights now...

A few years back, I bought a 541-T with a blond, curly maple stock...I put a Leupold Compact in 3x9x33 on her and it looks perfect...

I'm am highly impressed with the Prostaff.  In fact they are 10 times better than the Leupold I just bought.
And yet it is not a Nikon you have on your Model 60, you have posted in a picture here on an other .
And while you like Nikon and there is nothing wrong with them.
Others like Leupold, as as William mentioned a Leupold I brought up that Leupold makes the small adjustable scope in three forms of Rifle man and Var X1 and 2.  After all this is a plinking and small game hunting rifle and a $400 scope is not really needed.
Personally I like the Weaver scopes (the K and V lines).  I think they are 100% the quality of the Leupold Var X II stuff at 75 to 80% the cost.
I also like that they use a 38mm objective instead of a 40mm and it looks right on some of the smaller framed rifles like Rimfire, Pistol length and the micro Mauser actions.
I own quite a few. I would not scoff at other brands, I own Bushnell, Leupold, old Redfield, and a Simmons 44 mag 3-9 scope that is on a marlin 918 22LR, So far not a bad scope for under $40.  The Simmons we mounted on a rifle for my friends kid to shoot and since we were shooting at 100 yards he too wanted to shoot were we were.
A few minutes of setting up some sand bags and he was sighting  it in.  The combo of rifle, scope, Remington 40 grain golden bullets, and kid had groups of a 1/2 Dollar.  Then he was off turning clay birds onto pieces and those quarter sized peices into dust all over the range.

I do not think the maker matters in your case William, I think what matters is the shape of the scope so you can easily see through it and keep your head down on the stock.
After saying that I went to the Remington website.
The speed master of today does not look like what I rememeber as a kid in the 80's shooting one.
I remember the brass shield that tossed rounds down the sleeve of a left handed friend.
But I did not remember the Monte Carlo high comb Stock.  I remember more of a standard stock, highly polished and dark walnut with the fluer de leis checkering pattern like an 870 Wing master of the time.  The tall sights on the new rifle too I do not rember.  I remember quality sights just lower on the rifle.
Having stuck a Huge scope on a little rifle once, it looked top heavy.  Worked fine, just looked strange with a huge bell and a skinny barrel.

The Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 is as good as the Prostaffs.

Brighter, clearer, easier to adjust, and more nicely finished.

The Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 is as good as the Prostaffs.
The 1.5-4.5x 32 Banner is one "do it all" scope and a great value.
Only concern is the crosshairs were kind of thick for some of my higher accuracy plinking.

I have just about decided on the Leupold VX-II 4-12X40 adjustable Objective.
Now to find rings, mounts and base that will fit the 552.
Opinions still welcomed.

Great choice.
I think you will like the fine crosshairs when you are shooting at small stuff like shotgun shells 100 yards away.
I really like the VX-II with AO thats on my 22.

William,

I'd look around and find a used Leupold M8 3x riflescope. I can't imagine why you would need a 4-12 riflescope on a 22lr. The 3x leupolds have been out of production for years but are still available on the used market. They are my favorite riflescope and I own about a dozen of them.. :o
