Disagree - If I had williamlaytoncrazymoney, I would have the Leupold VX-II 4-12X40 AO on my 22.

I'm am highly impressed with the Prostaff.  In fact they are 10 times better than the Leupold I just bought.

The Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 is as good as the Prostaffs.

 Then logically speaking, you believe the Bushnell to be 10x better than your Leupold.

Removed a Bushnell 1.4x4.5x32, installed a Leupold FX-I 4x28 on my 10/22.
It was an upgrade in clarity and because of the L's fine reticle.
But the Bushnell teamed up with a handi-rifle 30-30 to down a couple of bucks.

I have that scope on my CZ 452 and really like it.
EFR (extended focus range) is the same thing as AO (adjustable objective).

Swampman - I am backing off of disagreeing with you on 40 being way too big, but only a little.
I was thinking mine was 40 til I saw saddlebum's post. Mine is this 33 and is proportional for a gun the size of the CZ 452. If they made a 4-12 AO in 32-33 obj bell size, I would have bought it for my half-century-plus eyes. Had a 4-12x40 banner on my cz for a while. It was slightly larger than than what seemed proportional for the CZ, but I think the Speedmaster has more heft than the CZ and could absorb the size of a 40 without overwhelming it.

I am thinking down the line--if/IF--I decide to do something I have beeen thereatening to do for a couple of years now with a 223 project.
I admit that it is a big scope---I did say BIG. Now, after that statement, where does it say I can't put the Hubble on one?
I am a crazy, constipated, crotchity, old Western, SOB'in, fart and it sounds like fun to me.
Don't tell the Hen what I am doing.

I spent my crazymoney on a CZ lefthanded bolt action 22 with a leupold EFR rimfire scope a couple of months ago.
I call it my "church gun"; the one I wear my nice clothes to go shoot.

In that case A Bushnell 6-18X40 AO
Or a Weaver 6-24X42 AO.
The combination of the Rem 700 SPS, Heavy stock and the 6-24 Weaver almost make shooting it not fun as you hit everything out to 200 yards.
One of the favorites is trying to take just the cap off a water or soda bottle at 200 Yards with the 223.

I have posted this "somewhere" just recently.
Leupold responded--finally-- after the purchase was cemented.
The two responders from Leupold suggested the same scope I got--the VX-II 4-12X40.
This response does not mean anything if you look at it from the standpoint that they are trying to sell---but---if it is an honest reply as to what to get for my purpose as stated in the request for information and suggestions (opinions)--- then, it gives assurance that my thinking was spot on.
If---ifififif--I proceed with the .223 or .308 project---.223 more than likely--it will be an excellent scope for it.
I just don't know enough about these rifles--as they are presently built and all the ends and outs to be real confident that I know what I want to do.
I don't need to get into a number of them--just one will do.

With your 223 or 308 project I guess an intent as to what you want to do with it would be good.
I have four (4) 223 rifles
the AR with open sights (military shoots and 3 gun)  I do have a screw on 4X20 M16 scope but only use it for bowling pins.
the Contender Carine with a 2.5-7 X32 Weaver (wonder around coyote and Javilina Gun)
the Cz 527 wiht a 3-9X38 Weaver (So far Javilina and the short rifle for Coyote)
and finally the
Remington 700 SPS in a heavy stock with a 6-24 X42AO with a 6" sun shade  Looks cool no huge function. (Informal targets and Varmints like ground squirrels and coyote out to 250 yards)  So far only the ground squirrels.  But the 24X really allows you to see a squirrel nogin at 200 Yards that the 9X that I have on the Cz does not. 
But each has a purpose and a specific use when I bought it.
I had a Bushnell 6-18X40 AO on a Ruger 77/22 in 22 Hornet for a while and it looked funny - it is now on the new Cz 452 Varmint and the heavy barrel looks right. 
I have two 308 rifle
one is a Rem 700 V with a 3-9X50 Var X III that has worked great on deer and other targets out to 300 Yards.  But is not the take the bottle cap off at 200 yards only because I can not see just the cap at 200 yards.  Hits a .5 liter water bottle all day.
The other is a open sight Ruger that does not apply to your use as it is a woods deer rifle and should have taken it pig hunting a few time rather than what I did take.
But picking a use for the 223 or 308 will dictate what scope you want for it.

My 60 has a Nikon 4x Rimfire.  The light gathering is fantastic.  Should work on the Speedmaster, too (I'll get one of those, and a Shiloh Sharps when I win the lottery.)
