You are more of a man than I am.  I couldn't imagine shooting my 500 without a recoil pad...and a thick sweatshirt. ;)

Looks great though!  Tell us how it shoot.

It didn't take too many full bore 400's to do me with the metal butt plate.  I put the 500 barrel back on it's original frame and a Limbsaver slipon over the factory pad.  It was tolerable with full power 440's that I loaded a week or two ago.  On the B/C frame, the 500 reminds me of shooting a Ruger No 3 with hot 45/70's.  Not pleasant!!!

Great lookin gun.  My BC CR is in the process of becoming a 50 Alaskan.  I think yours is gonna hurt way more than mine.  I am gonna use the BC stock set on a 30-30 and put a handi grip on the 50.  I would seriously think about a lace-on pad if I were you.  Really does make my shoulder hurt just looking at that gun.

The Topper Delux eClassic buttstock is what you want.  They are nice walnut and have a good recoil pad.

If you are going for a "classic" experience, why the "full bore 400" loads? In my 500 I had trouble finding reasonable load data, so I am using 50/70 load data with good results, which is really not that bad.

I only have the two frames and barrels and the 50 belongs on the one with the recoil pad.  335's at 1200 fps are fun with either frame.  I cracked a few through the BC 45 today ranging from 45 CB Spl w/200 gr to 350 LBT in 45LC.  Best accuracy was tumble lubed unsized Lyman 452424 (Keith SWC) w/ 9.0 W231.  Pleasant and quite accurate for anything I have shot so far.  2 shots with the 350's on H110 ( My heavy Ruger Bisley load) were enough.  I have no idea about the handi velocity with this load.  About 12-13 gr Unique in the 500 w/ 335 Ranier plated HP is easy shooting and plenty potent for any use I will put the rifle to.  I have to shoot a few heavies once in a while though.  Can't help myself!!

Tom,

I never took you for a masochist when you bought the stock and receiver.  ;)  My BC with 300 gr. Corbons is pretty stout off the bench, I can't imagine your 500!!!    :o

It did make a great looking carbine....glad you got it!

What's the point of owning a 500 anyway? It's expensive to shoot and beats you up at the bench... doesn't sound like much fun to me. :-\
The 357, 44 and 45 have everything covered already.
It is a nice lookin' rifle though.

If you cast your own, its not that expensive to shoot, you could easily get the cost of reloading down to the 10 cent range depending on the cost of your lead.

I load some real light loads for my Handi, recoil feels like a 223, of course you can ramp it up to pretty insane power levels though.

Tom,
I'm glad to see your not dissuaded in your pursuit of the enjoyment of shooting your .500 BC by all this folderol concerning recoil pads. ;) Truth be told however you've been given some good advice, a lace on pad would be a very good idea! I use 440gr. CPB over a hot load of Lil'Gun in my .500 S&W and IMHO, the recoil by comparison makes the 45/70 with level 2 loads seem like a wimp gun.
Congrats on a beautiful carbine!

"Whats the point"........well, in the Victorian age the Snider .577 was in use all over the globe, and when superceded by the 450/577 in the Martini action the recoil was probably pretty close the half the weight of the average recruit (or at least felt that way). Imagine the punishment of those against the Zulu attacks.

I have to say that i would be tempted toward a leather lace-on recoil pad...but the upholsterer in me would also want to sew on some cartridge loops.

The .500 S&W eats scopes for breakfast (much worse than hot .45-70 loads.)  The .45 Colt is not even as powerful as the .357 mag.

You may not be able to tell the difference but it's huge.
