45ACP vs 10mm
« on: September 11, 2010, 06:52:24 PM »
I'm considering a new pistol and I've been thinking hard about either a 10mm or 45ACP.  I know the 10mm is more powerful than the 45acp but since I handload is there a way I can safely get the 45acp close or up to 10mm power?

The hunter in me says 10mm, but the frugal cheap arse in me says 45acp because the ammo is everywhere.

Any advise?

teddy:  Nope, you can't get the 45 to perform like the 10mm and you will probably bust the gun trying.  I would choose the 10mm since you reload, and you can reload the 10mm to shoot easier for both you and the pistol.  I understand your concern about cost for ammo but you can purchase 10mm in bulk from either Cabelas or Sportsman's Guide.  10mm brass is widely available and Starline is a excellent source, as well as MidSouth Shooters Supply, and any bullet you can shoot down the tube of a 40 S&W or 38-40 is fodder for the 10.

If you plan on using the 1911 platform for your choice you can always purchase a 40 S&W barrel for the 10 and shoot scads of inexpensive 40 S&Ws.  jmtcw.

I load both calibers and 10mm bullets are cheaper.
Plus the 10mm will usually out penetrate the .45 auto because the bullets are relatively longer and thinner (greater sectional density).
Most 10mm guns can also be converted to .40s&w with just a barrel swap.

You could get a 45 Super, but that would defeat the purpose of going frugal.

I vote 10mm.

I voted with my wallet and got the dies and conversion kit for 10mm.  Now I just need to get the gun.  I'm going to buy a glock 20SF.

Teddy12B,

Before you drop that hard earned money on the glock, check out a EAA Witness.  A slightly oversized copy of the CZ75 and chambered in the 10mm.  If purchased in an other chambering a slide with barrel, recoil spring, and magazine can be ordered directly from EAA.  My Witness in .45 ACP is a good pistol and can be carried condition one (cocked and locked) like a M1911 or hammer down on a live round in  the chamber with a double action first shot.  In single action mode mine has a decent trigger that can be short stroked.

I've looked at them, but some of their reviews at budsgunshop.com were pretty bad.  There's not much difference in price between one of those and a glock especially a used one, so I think I'm pretty well set on the glock.  I appreciate the heads up on the EAA Witness's, but I'll be getting on the glock bandwagon.  I'm glad to hear that you got a good one.

I picked up a box of hornady 180gr XTP/HP recently and now I have something I can copy and duplicate once I get the gun and fire some rounds through the chronograph.

I sense a gratuitous pic opportunity.
I got this 2nd gen beauty off Gunbroker for $440, added a set of Dawson Precision adjustable fiber optic sights to help with my over 50 eyes, sweet shooter!

I see that you've already made a choise, so I'm weighing in a little late.  My two cents is that you can't go wrong choosing between 10mm and 45.  10mm being more powerful but I'd make a point of not getting shot with either.  Both rounds have so much to offer.  Just looking at the subject line I knew 'this guy will come out of this just fine'.

I went through the same thought process you are going through now a few years ago.

 Now, I have a Colt Delta 10mm 1911, and a Colt Centinal 1911 in .45 acp.

Still havn't decided which I like the best.

Well and another way I look at is that every gun guy should probably have a 1911 45acp.  I'd had some in the past and bored with them, but if I go with the glock 10mm, I'll still be able to rationalize later why I "need" that springfield loaded I've been drooling over.

If you are going to get a hunting gun, get a hunting gun.  Don't you ahve a 44mag or two?
If you want a cary gun get a carry gun.
I think the one gun that does both is a 4" K framed 357 Mag.  Model 19 or 66.
I guess an L frame would work too.  Either are similar sized to the full size 1911 or Glock.
Yes I know the 10mm gives a little more horse power than the 357 but the 357 has hunting bullets.
The cheap side of you would be happy with wad cutters for plinking, target and IDPA.
The personal protection side  the Remington 125 grain Semi Jacketed Hollow Point  @ 1400 FPS- still #1 in the one shot stop.
There are some that are down loaded versions but they are more of a 38 Special +P+.
Wih a 158 grain Jacket Soft point you are hunting.
Most of the 45 and 10mm bullets are either target or personal protection.

Havin' gone thru the cheaper/hunting decision myself, I went w/the 1911 45ACP w/a 460 Rowland drop-in for hunting as I wound up reloading anyway. Haven't field experience w/the 460 yet, but the range session won my heart ~ unbelievable ! I've had a 10mm and even a 40 S&W before but we didn't connect/bond like this 45ACP/460 Rowland convertible. YMMV

I do have a 44mag, and I intend to to take it hunting with me this year.  I've just been fasinated with 10mm for while now and wanted to make sure that there wasn't a 45acp load I didn't know about that matched it's power.  There are plenty of good hunting bullets out there for the 10mm.  The Hornady XTP/HP is made in 10mm.  I took a buck with one in 44mag and was very pleased.

If you go with the 45ACP Glock G21 you can get a 10mm conversion barrel & mags and have the best of both worlds. ;)

Interesting, can you buy the 10mm and get a 45acp conversion for it?

No, the breach face on the 10mm slide is too narrow for .45acp.
You could buy a 10mm upper from Lone Wolf (slide, barrel, internal parts) and put it on a G-21 frame.

KKM Precision has a stock length and a 6 IN drop in 10mm conversion barrel for the Glock G21 for around $165.00. Or you can search the web an get some deals on a complete G21, G20 uppers.

Yeah, if you ever see an original Glock 10mm or .45acp  upper for sale, snap it up, because they are as rare as hen's teeth.
Glock used to sell complete uppers for a very reasonable price, but stopped about 5 or 6 years ago.
The Lone Wolf slide, barrel, and parts will set you back around $450, plus you'll have to look at that silly wolf etched into the slide and barrel.
If you get the Glock 21, all you need is a 10mm conversion barrel and mags.

At the range yesterday I had a couple failures to feed with my 21, what in the world I thought, oops, I had loaded .45 ammo into my 10mm magazines.
