my experience has been that a cat left out at night ,will sooner or later turn up missing..i live at the edge of a large habitat for wild life..
 even a big tom will be hardpressed to make it against yotes,fox an bobcat..
 now a female cat in season will many times get a pass by the bobcats..this is when you get bobbed tale kittens.
 as to song birds ..it can be the case that your cat will take them.. but the ones i keep are the ones that are good mouse and ratters..any critter i feed will have some useful purpose.. my wifes dog ,helps ease the lonelyness an lets me know if anyone approaches the house..cats are mouse , rodent an snake control..
but i agree with neutering them..theres just not enough people that will give kittens a good home..
 i ll be takeing one of my daughters kittens in soon..it will be neutered an im gonna mabe pay to get my daughters cat neutered[this kittens ma ma]..my little dog just needs some company as im not near as much company for her as my wife was..when she was with me ,i use to joke about her loving that lil dog more than she did me..

I had to think of this thread last night. My wife said a friend of hers told her a red tailed hawk took a swipe at her 15 pound dog in her backyard day before yesterday. I have my doubts. I wonder if the hawk was after another bird in flight and as it pulled up from its dive it appeared to be going after the dog? But I wasnt there.

I've seen Bald Eagles swoop down and grab 25 to 30 pound salmon, only to be pulled down under water.  Many times I have seen an Eagle out in the middle of the river flapping it's wings and slowly making it to shore, refusing to let go of a big fish.  First thing the Eagle did after grabbing it was to bite it behind the head killing it, but it was too big to pull out of the water and fly.  So the eagle pulled it to shore and ate it on the spot.  Oh these fish are Salmon.

heck ,i think hawks an such are beautiful.. but animals im responcible for are off limits..
 have not seen this hawk lately..im hoping he has learned to hunt elsewhere..
 ive watched hawks dive from so high ,they were just a speck.. you hear them before you see them most time..at dive speeds they make a good bit of noise..
 ive watched this many times ,but each time they pull up just a bit,, before they hit prey thats on the grnd..
 my opinion is they have hollow bones,that just might break if they hit ground prey ,wide open..
 hitting prey in the air is a different thing now.
this is not book on them ,,just what ive observed..
