77 mk II ring problem?
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:40:42 AM »
I found a 77 MK II in 7x64 a couple of years ago but I haven't had a chance to play with it until now. I mounted a 3x9x50 vx2 on it that came off of another gun and is known to be good. I used an extra hi rear and hi fore ring as per ruger's website. Here is the rub. I went to bore sight it and With the verticle correction as far down as it will go, I am still 2 feet hi at 25 yards. I entend to try a medium front ring, as I still have a bit of room before my bell hits the barrel, but I wonder if I will bend my scope tube with that much varience. Any advice would be apprecieated.

Are you sure you used the front for the front and the rear for the rear?
I did that once with one of my Rugers.  Caught it before I tightened the scope into the rings.

If not it is somebody's way of telling you to use the top plex for under 200 yards and to use the cross hairs out to 500.  And the bottom Plex out to 800 yards.
I know this is not helpful but could not stop myself. ::)

Hey Tuna,

Where did you get the rings??  I've had quite a few issues with ruger rings.  I don't think you need the xtra high rear ring.  I ended up buying a set of high leupolds for my MKII.  I have a 4x12x50 Vari-XII on it.  I'd suggest that you buy the matched set and not try to adjust with different ring hieghts.

I am using Leupold rings that I bought at a local shop. The rings came with an xtra high and a high and they are on in the correct positions. I agree about the lack of need for the xtra high based on the bell clearance but I didnt realize that until I mounted them. I will see if I can find a set of matching highs but I still don't think that will get me to where I need to be. thanks for the help guys.

I had not thought of those possibilities. Talk about a learning curve. :o

What model Ruger do you have?
M77R   (uses only Ruger Rings - No factory sights) - Mine has Williams sights.
M77RS (Uses only Ruger Rings - Has factory mounted sights)
M77ML (Flat top drilled and tapped for weaver mounts)  Mine has factory sights.
Call Ruger to get the propper rail number (s) for this.

It is the RS. I spoke with them today and they suggested I try some Lower rings. I have some on order. I will update this when they get here.
