I have always been of the opinion that any man old enough to wear a uniform and serve his country is old enough to do as any other military member.  But I can see this from both ends, I have ran across a large number of 18-20 (and some even older) that are not mature enough to own a BB gun. course there are a lot of ADULTS (?) that fit into the pictue too..................

They can do more damage with their vote than a handgun. They can already own a shotgun or rifle . And criminal kids like criminal adults don't follow the laws anyway and already have a handgun .

Why would you have to be 18. Wasn't 10-12 more common back in the day?

Back in the day was different! That was when Your Dad had control of his children and their actions.
The nanny state has usurped that right. I thank God I had the privilege of living in "The Day"

My Grand children will never know what it was like, because my generation and I have allowed this to happen.

18 is already the age for long guns.  It's easier to sell a bill to the public that promotes synching up the purchasing age than to lower it that low.  10-12 year olds can already own long guns if they are given to them by their parents (got my first gun at 8 :)).

Sounds like a plan to me.  As I said in another thread, saying that people are adults at 18 but still restricting their rights (drinking, handgun purchase, and various other things depending on state) until they're 21 is just nonsense.

As a matter of fact, I'd say it better to draft one piece of legislation that defines an adult to be a person of 18 years of age or older (and that's ALL it does), and all other legislation to simply require that the person be an "adult as defined by bill xyz".  Then we we're sure that all things requiring adulthood are referencing a common age rather than each hard coding it's own numerical age into the bill.

In Michigan at 18 you can legally buy and own a handgun as long as you don't buy it from a federal licensed dealer.  I have transfered a handgun into one of the kids name at the local sheriff dept. and he was only 19.

It doesn't make sense for me to take their money, buy it from a dealer, and then go tranfser it into their names...I would think they would change it just because of that going on all the time anyways.

It's just a "fed" thing in this state.  Just wondering, how many other states allow 18 year olds to buy from private people or to have one transfered into their names?

I definately fall into the crowd that says old enough for war is old enough to buy a beer and own any gun they want.  I know there are many 18 years old who aren't mature enough for that, but I know a guy in his 40's who just moved out of his parents home and bought his first house.  I think it's time to expect people to be adults at a certain age instead of letting them be crowns moving in and out of family members homes until their 40's.

On the other hand I don't have any false illusions anymore that the NRA is out for the better good of "the people" when they are endorsing Harry Reid.  I lost all respect for the NRA after that and even if it costs me my range membership I don't intend to send them anymore of my money until they clean themselves out.

age of consent varies from 16-18 state to state (used to be younger too), drinking age varies state to state and situation to situation in many states (in mo a parent can let a kid drink an unspecified amount, no harm- no foul, though child endangerment and dfs would take the kid if the kid got sick), as far as I know smoking is the same, gun laws change DRASTICALLY if no ffl's or interstate purchases are involved, contractual agreements, checking/banking, credit cards, drivers' licenses (ammended now to be 16-18 probatory instead of just getting the real deal at 16, used to be if the person could pass the test then it was awarded the license), dropping out of high school, joining the military, medical consent, ability to work and live "on one's own", ability to renounce citizenship, ability to travel outside of the nation (and oftentime states even) without parental consent, right to marry without parental consent or emancipation... and that's all I can think of!  it goes even farther, and it's different everywhere!

Squib the things you are talking about have one fundemental difference, they are not rights.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

they aren't "enumerated", that's true enough in the context of age of accountability or something similiar.  still, it's disgusting.  everytime the bar is raised for age, the people failing to clear it just keep getting older but no less frequent.

stupid people of all ages are terrible drivers, can't text and steer, can't handle their alcohol, can't put priority one on the wheel instead of the radio...
stupid people have negligent discharges at all ages, bad handling, lack of muzzle awareness, etcetera
stupid people get promiscuous and have bastard children that burden the state, pass std's, continue the welfare generational parasitism, up until too   old to be fertile/virile anymore
stupid people from 18- ??? vote straight ticket democrat, green party, and other stuff too.

once puberty has taken hold the "kids" aren't going to get anymore responsibile or wise through any mechanisms but ideaology, wisdom and experience.  their brains and personalities are developed.  I really believe in the military classification of "MAM's" being the standard for being a man, and it should apply to women too.  You caught the mam? billy?

buying a gun is in effect signing a legal paper ( if from a dealer) for that to be legal wouldn't the person signing need to be "of legal age" ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
