I'm still waiting on my savage 10ml to come in and I was wondering about bullets to shoot I have a bunch of the TC shockwaves yellow tip non-bonded with the blacksabots and a bunch of the hornady FPB's. From everything I've read they only reccomend the MMG sabots but has anyone tryed the shockwaves and the TC sabots or the FPB's in their savage muzzle loaders with smokeless and had any luck?

savage doesnt recommend shooting full bore Lead projectiles with smokeless powder.

www.thorbullets.com is something to try out. Email thor and ask for savage loads as hes been testing them in his.

I would avoid conicals with smokeless. They are probably ok with blackpowder and the subs.

With smokeless, I wouldn't shoot anything other than the combinations suggested by Savage.

the FPB's can be used, but with smokeless you need a tight fit. the barrels on the savages vary so its possible you may have to knurl your bullet up to get a proper fit. with a tight fit and finding a "sweet spot" with your chosen bullet should provide lots o fun. as for sabots, same applies. you can use any sabot makers sabot, as long as you have a tight fit still. anything loose will not give proper or consistant ignition.

I am shooting the Hornady 250 SST with the supplied sabot and getting great results.
I use 43 grains of VV N110.

Really wipes out a deer on a lung shot.

The fellow that developed it and his son live up the road in Greensboro...The son frequents the NC Hunting forums...

He shoots the 300gr .451 Hornady XTPs, has for years and reports devastating results...If memory serves me correctly he pairs this up with the MMP-24 sabots...

color of a sabot does not mean much, some people use the orange MMP sabots. my father's go to load with his savage is an orange MMP sabot for .458 bullets and a 435gr cast lead bullet with 5744 and couldnt ask for anything better. just depends what your particular gun likes...

I've seen some incredible targets shot by Bill Ball using the 300gr xtp.. he also might be considered an above average shooter too

I have tried TC sabots, because they are available locally. The bullets were my .430 240 grain round nose cast, the most accurate and Remington .429 240 grain hollow point, very accurate. All charged with 5744. I have tries MMP sabots with good results with a variety of bullets. The Model 10 shoots most loads well.

I would suggest you stick with the loads & sabots that Savage recommends. Watch the boards when people start having trouble it's because they didn't.

why is that smokeless powder wont melt them

Yes, it will. That's why Savage says you should only use the black one. Even the black ones give trouble if you don't allow a lot of cooling time between shots.

that might be the load combo. that shoots best and they want you to use it makes them look good but it wont melt any of them. smokeless are black shot with t.paper will not burn the paper. the platic left in any barrel from sabot is like lead from a cast boolet blow by.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I just got the rifle in today. i have to look through my powder supply to see if I have any that will work. I was reading on gunblast that he was using Lil'Gun in his savage but wouldn't disclose the loads he stated he reeally liked the results and I have a couple of pounds of lil gun on the shelf I use in my 500 smith. Like I said in my first post I know the reccomend the mmg sabots but I have four 30rnd packs of the 250 grain shockwaves with the black sabots and about 6 15rnd packs of the hornady fbps (stocked up on them when walmart clearances them after hunting season last year) I'm not looking to hot rod my loads with the shockwaves just duplicate the velocitys of the 150 grain charges of black powder, pyrodex triple 7 etc. What kinda of accuracy are you guys getting with your savage muzzle loaders anyway?

I used Harvester Crush Rib Sabots and had failure to fire, the powder did not ignite, just the primer went off, because they did not fit tight in the bore and did not compress the load, using a .451 bullet. A tight fit is critical.

yeah dont use loads that are NOT in the booklet. Theres some idiot on youtube shooting a cva bolt action and claims he can shoot lil gun safety because * this here is a bolt action, and its the strongest muzzleloader you can git!*

Funny how he is shooting a black powder sub during the video though.

i agree for the sake of safety and to keep the warranty good things on your side do what the book says . smokeless powder burns hotter and has more pressure than black. but like the book said try to keep the barrel as cool as possible to keep from getting the sabot weak it didn't say it would melt it. now gotta go to something else.

Another question about the 10ml is what scope bases are compatible with it ie. weaver bases for other model savages will fit the ML?
