history of this particular gun. i bought it several years ago, mounted a cheapo scope on it, and shot it about 50 times before putting it in the cabinet to rest. a few weeks ago i got it out and decided to see just how good it was. i put about 100 more rounds though it shooting at water bottles and such, never trying to measure a group, just watching stuff blowup.
yesterday i mounted a tasco varmint/tactical scope to help me see better. per tasco instructions i started zeroing at 50 yards. after feeding it several bullets, i managed to shoot 2 consecutive groups of .6 and .63 inches and decided to move to 100 yards. i only shot two groups at 100 yards, the best was 1.6 inches, we wont talk about the other. of the 24 or so bullets i fed it yesterday, only about 6 ejected.
today I polished the chamber and put a washer and set-screw on the fore end. i shot 9 times today and all ejected properly. the first group was about 3.5 inches. i attribute that to a super clean barrel.... maybe. i let it sit for about an hour and shot another group. the first two were practically touching, the third was 6 inches left. user error?
?? the third group measured 1.6, the same as yesterdays group. I think i am shooting about as good as i can with such a heavy trigger, so now what? try a new load? i am thinking about sending it in for a .223 barrel, mostly so i can get a trigger job at the same time. polishing the chamber seems to have worked very, very good. but the washer under the forearm really did not help any.
what loads seem to work well in these guns? i am launching a 65g v-max bullet with 41 grains of IMR 4895 with an oal of 2.6"
i got the primer pocket cleaner, and have been measuring the brass to make sure it isnt too long. several cases were near maximum length, so i wll need a trimmer before i start loading again.
