Judge OKs plan to kill wolves

Anchorage Daily News

(Published: December 5, 2003)

An Anchorage judge has given the green light to a state plan to kill some three dozen wolves around McGrath.

In a 14-page ruling issued early Friday afternoon in Anchorage, Superior Court Judge Sharon Gleason found no legal justification to postpone the aerial wolf-control plan. State biologists believe that eliminating the predators will allow the local moose herd to grow, eventually providing more meat for subsistence hunters.

A national animal rights group and seven Alaska residents had sued, claiming the state had not met legal requirements to approve the plan.

They contend the moose herd is big enough for local needs.

Alaska Board of Game chairman Mike Fleagle said the ruling vindicates the state and could portend a new era in which small numbers of wolves are killed to help buoy moose and caribou populations.

"I think the public knows we're not in danger of losing our wolf population," said Fleagle, a McGrath resident.

The state has already issued permits to three pilot/gunner teams to shoot the wolves from their airplanes. Their only compensation will be the wolves they shoot.

Looks like the anit's are going to boycott Alaska. Maybe some will follow me into the woods up here! :)

Personally, tourist who feel that deeply about wolves can just stay out of AK.

As for the court rulings, you know its going to be appealed and it will go to the 9th and it will be shot down. You goota love the outside for running AK :x .

I'm surprised the judge OK'ed it, she has to have political gains, she does live in anchorage.

Sorry, I hate politics and people who live in different states that try to run ours.

he 9th Circus Court has sure come up with some strage decisions.  They will probably shoot it down as usual.  I don't think even one of them is an Alaskan.

We will have to wait and see what happens this time.

Yeah I gotta laugh at that gal threatening a boycott. Don't know about McGrath but around Aniak, Chuathbaluk, Quinhagak, Kwethluk, New Stuyahok Togiak, and Dillingham there are a lot of people who would be very pleased with less wolves and a lot less tourists.  Looks like win - win to a lot of bush residents  :-D  Of course there are some locals that might be hurt by a boycott but they aren't as vocal.

Maybe the state should consider auctioning off some wolf hunts to outsiders to help offset the revenue loss. Let guides provide hunts etc.
