report on the rem/h&r 35 whelen
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:08:05 PM »
my son (j2) received it yesterday for me.. i'm outta town work'n as always lately  >:(
he handloaded 30 of his recipes from new brass and cci primers that do great in his.
first he removed the handi-grip stock set and replaced with the t/h camo-lam off my swift.
but it ain't gunna stay on there long :o.......NO !!!!
anaway.  all 30 went bang on there first try and then he took the fire-formed brass
and did his magic to them ;)... no frills either... nothing special, and definatley no false shoulder.
all them fired too  ;D  he did all the chamber, bore and depth mic'n in all the right places and concluded... there is no problem with this shooter.
were gunna shoot this thing until, if, maybe it FTF. then he will find the solution, if any....
it looks like it might be one a them gud'uns  ;D  like the 4 others that have come thru here.
i wish we had one of them problem whelens... so he cud do his machine'n and knowledge to find the correct
fix. which we already know what it is.... but, we'll plead the 5th ;D
sea-ya.....

Good job.  Maybe you have the problem licked.

I'm wondering if Rem is sizing their loaded ammo so the semi and pumps will not have problems...maybe sizing the bases slightly smaller...enough so the Rem ammo will set too deep in the Handi chamber and cause the FTF.

I have a set of 30-06 small base dies and when I use that sizer to size brass then use that brass to set the headspace on my Savage 30-06 barrel it shoots fine...with that brass no matter what the brand, but the bolt will NOT close on any of the other brands of factory ammo I have.  I have to reset the headspace again on the Hornady 30-06 light magnum ammo also, if I have set it with Federal ammo.

Lots of possibilities.

Luck.

you are correct nfg....
all factory ammo is sized to function in autoloaders... and that can affect us one-hole shooters  >:(
one of the major reasons i don't do... store bought ammo
thanks ;D
