I'm hoping to use the 10point crossbow on some nice young doe the first weekend in October. I bagged a yearling last year. Ground the meat and pit into about 2 1/2 pound freezer bags. I cook it with numerous onions assortment of peppers and then mix it with some short grain brown rice. I make a big batch for the weeks worth of lunch at work. Good stuff.

Been sighting in centerfire Handi rifles that I can't hunt deer with in OH. >:(

Crossbow has new cables/string and is ready to fire opening morning.  Hoping for anterless as I am a guest on a farm and don't want to be stealing one of my host's big bucks.

Building a fully rifled 410 slug gun that might be ready for gun season.  Will be shooting hand loaded 300+ grain slugs in the 1200 to 1400 FPS range.

Shooting fox squirrels with a 357 Max Handi, tad bit of over kill but quite fun. ;D

Ive been getting my 870 ready for deer.  Just got a slug barrel for it at swappers day in johnstown. Im stoked and cant wait to get a deer with it.
Yesterday i went to the farm with a buddy to let him try my .223 and my .308.  He wants a varmint rifle pretty bad it seems.  he enjoyed it and now i see a handi rifle in his future.  We are planning on trying to call in some coyotes next week.  Neither of us have done this before.  probably gonna take the ar15 and my handi out for the hunt.
We went to check out my treestand and on the way there i stumbled onto a groundhog.  He is now in the big alfalfa field in the sky.  Nice clean shot. That makes 3 for the year.  once the crops are off i hope to take many more.  Thats about the high point of my week and now its back to work until sunday.  I have a 3 day work week so it provides lots of down time.  makes hunting season go really well.

BB what barrel did you deceide on for the .410?  i've been messing around on the slug and slug gun form, where i realized i could load my own sabot's for about .75 pennies per shell so i bought a 20ga tracker II today and had it sighted in with 5 hornady SST's.

Shaner,

Building the 410 slug gun from a 444 Marlin.  Got a couple of options on how to modify the chamber, waiting on the gun to arrive to get some measurements and go from there.  I think the real fun will be working up a load.  All the 410 loads that I have looked at use fairly fast burning powders; I think this is to maximize case capacity for lead shot.  I don't want to have to put a bunch of filler in the hull so I am going to start with Trail Boss and see what happens.  Might be ready for deer season this year but I kinda doubt it.  If it doesn't work as a 410 slug gun I will probably ream out the chamber to handle a 45/90 case and have me a 44/90.  ;D

Shaner,

I've hand reamed a couple of guns but will not be doing the reaming on this one. I have a co-conspirator who is building a 410 slug gun on a pump action.  He has a reamer that he can open up the chamber a bit but it is a lathe operation so I will not be doing it!  Me, power equipment and metal have issues from time to time. :P  I really need this 410 slugger like another hole in the head, already have (2) rifled 12 ga slug guns, (2) 50 cal inlines, a 1911 in 45 Super and a smoothbore 20 ga Rem slug gun.  One can't be too prepared, never know when the deer might start shooting back.  ;)

Well, the lake is so low because of the drought that I plan to haul out the pontoon fishing boat Monday (9-20).  I sent my Savage 220 slug gun back to Savage because of some misfires, but hope they get it right as I can get MOA with that 20 gauge slug gun with the AccuTrigger.  Sighting in my crossbow, but will miss opening day because I will be working Kid's Day at the Leetonia Sportsman's Association.  One year we had 604 kids for the totally free day so it takes a lot of work.  Any volunteers?  ;D

I'm also breaking in a new air rifle.  It's the new Nitro Piston and it is quiet and accurate.  Mine is a .22.

Other than all of that I just eat and sleep and write my columns for the newspaper.  ;)

Hey star,

What kind of Air rifle do you have?  I have been looking at the RWS Diana 34's but have never gone so far as to buy one.  The piston intrigues me though.  I never did like the twang.

Matt

I bought the Remington Nitro Piston.  It was recommended by a fellow club member who is my air rifle guru.  He uses air rifles almost exclusively on small game.  It is quiet and accurate.  I still haven't dialed it in to be as accurate as it can be as I'm told it takes a lot of shots to break it in.  I really love it.  I also love that it's made in the USA!  Crosman has the same thing under its logo.  If you do a search on YouTube you can find a review with it being shot in a video.

Shanner, I built up a 2 1/2 in. .410 on a Muslin Nigany action. Best I could do with it was around 1,700 fps. with a 243 gr. bullet. Remember your working with cases that were made for 15,000 psi max. and you will blow out the case rims not much over that, and brass cases are illegal in Oh for slugs.

To start with it was simple, I just had a .411 barrel chambered ib 410 2 1/2 in. and put it in the action. Probly should have used a .410 bore so I could have used 41 cal. handgun bullets, but this way I can fire .405 Win. ammo in it. And, yes I still have it.

Brass cases are illegal in Ohio?  Rats!  I was going to buy some 20 ga. brass and load patched round ball over black powder, but that may not fly, huh?  How about for tree rats or turkey with shot?

My understanding Of brass case slug loads is. The slug has to be seated below the rim of the case. Just like the plastic cased Punkin balls.

The citation from the ORC, in bold below, was sent out by a regulator when we asked what would be legal to shoot in a fully rifled 410.  As said before, cannot be an all brass cartridge and no neck turning, correction, "no necked down cartridges", not neck turned.  Nothing regarding OAL or bullet proturding from case.  Nothing regarding jacket bullets, which shouldn't be an issue since lots of folk are shooting copper sabot slugs.

As Catfish said before, the plastic hull will limit the pressure and velocity.  It looks to me like the best you can get is velocity approaching a starter load for a 50/45 sabot load in a 50 cal MZ.  As for accuracy, I have one load that a got a 2" group @ 55 yards.  I am still working on what powder and how much, not really looking for the most accurate load at this point.

Trying to make this shotgun is a fun project, but there are lots of fully rifled 12 & 20 ga slug gun/ammo combos out there that would easily outperform what I am working on, however the gun, so far, is very recoil friendly & a major improvement over 410 slugs available from commercial sources, except maybe HBBS. ;D
