How many arrows do you take hunting with you?
« on: September 15, 2010, 05:44:59 AM »
I'm new to archery hunting and curious about how many arrows people take hunting with them.  I keep seeing the compound bows with a side quiver that holds a half dozen arrows and I'm thinking that seems to be a little much.  I just don't see how I'm going to get a second shot off with a bow, unless it's a finishing shot.

If I go hunting with a bow this year I'm planning on having one arrow on the string ready, and maybe 3 other arrows in the quiver.  Does that sound about right?

My bow quiver holds 7, that's 6 broadheads and a blunt.

I know a guy that claims he shot at the same deer 3 times. She kept feeding and he thought he had missed and quit shooting. A few moments later she laid down and expired, had been hit all 3 times. You never know.
Thanks,

I carry 5.  3 broadheads, 1 blunt, and 1 field tip.

This is likely a dumb question, but why carry a blunt or field tip while hunting?

You guys make a good point about carrying more arrows.

I use the field tip occasionally to ensure arrow clearance or that my sights are still on.  Usually it's something like a long rough walk and quad ride into the stand and I'm concerned that my sights might have been knocked off... so I climb in the stand, pick a leaf or dirt clod at 30 yards and take a shot.  Then I climb down, get my arrow, and hunt.

The blunt (I use small game heads instead):

Wow that Judo point went all the way through.  That's gonna leave a mark.

My quiver holds 6 and I usually have them all loaded with BH's. Where we hunt the hogs are thick, and if I get them coming in, I will shoot everything I have with me, plus get out the revolver if needed.

The only good hog is on the pit or in the freezer.

Oh for deer, well I hope and pay that I only need one for them. I did shoot a ram this spring that needed a follow up, but that was more due to my shot and inexperience with their anatomy. Would have been an awesome shot on a deer but a little back for the ram.

I generally carry 4, 5 if I'm wanting to shoot a squirrel. Over thirty years of bowhunting and I believe only one time have I used more than two arrows during a hunt. My quivers generally hold many more arrows but have much better vane clearance half full. I no longer own a bow quiver, but the added weight always bugged me when the thing was full of arrows.

I carry five, all broadheads.

My brother used to carry only four arrows, until he shot at a doe four times... and missed all four times!  Now he carries six in a quiver and one by hand.  Getting out of the truck he had whacked the sight head on the tailgate and put all the pins out of alignment in all three axis.  He was considering leaping out of the treestand to try a knife attack but was not sure if that was legal!  That doe never knew how lucky she was.

Moral: Don't use a $15 sight!  And find out if you can legally kill a deer with a knife.

I carry three on the bow and three more in the truck.  I shot and lost the first three this year turkey hunting and needed the cool down time walking back to the truck to fetch the other three.  Just me.

Just me, I carry 3 with broad heads. My Quiver will hold 6, but I don't fill it up.

On the compound the quiver holds 6, and on my recurve it holds 4, and if I'm wearing my hunting hip quiver it also holds another 6  ::)

I carry 5, 2 three blade broadheads, 2 two blade broadheads and 1 blunt/smallgame point.  I know someone will ask about why the different broadheads.  I shoot the 3 blade heads great and they do a really good job penetrating out to 15 yards, but past 15 yards they have lost enough speed they don't work as well.  So for anything over 15 I shoot the 2 blade heads.  2 bladers penetrate better period, but I'd rather make the shot with a 3 blade for the much better blood trail....;)

I usually carry at least 3 with broadheads and one turkey head. You really can't have too many, as a wise old man told me once, "I'd rather have them and not need them than not have them and need them.

I used 3 arrows just to put one down 9/23. First shot wasa just under the spine. Dropped, the ran 15 yards into a ditch and kept trying to get up.

I don't like to watch  anything like that again.
