Hate to sound like a traitor but I got rid of my 700 in 7-08. The trigger was creepy and would not break at the same point consistantly. Bought a Browning xbolt. The trigger is crisp and reminds me of the sharpness of my win 94.

300 Ultra Mag the first year it came out. I too didn't like the trigger when I got it, it was +7 lb pull and creepy as well. That was easily fixed with a couple turns of a screw driver, and now it's a tad under 3 pounds and like glass. It's not a Jewell by any means, but damn nice for a factory trigger. I did put on an aftermarket thumbhole laminate stock with aluminum bedding, because the synthetic that came with it was nothing to write home about. It's kind of heavy, but it really tightened up my groups and tamed recoil to the point where it's fun to shoot.

Soon to add a 7-08 (or 25-06)...

Lloyd, I've never got to shoot a 8mm mag, but have heard they have tremendous amount of recoil. Is it as bad as they say it is?

not bad at all. Personal i think my rem bdl in 300 weatherby kicks more then the same gun in 8mag. That is comparing both with 200 grain bullets. the weatherby has a sharper recoil to it. Bottom line is if you can shoot a light 06 or a standard 300 win mag theres not that much differnce in the 8mag.

I owned an 8 mag for a time, (700BDL) and i thought the recoil was a lot more punishing that any 30-06 i've ever owned. In the end i sold it for that reason...

everyone has a differnt recoil level tolarance. To me it uncomfortable starts at the 340 wby or either of the ultra mags. there a step up from the 300wby and 8mag. My bdl 8mag is fitted in a cdl stock which is lighter but does have a better pad then the bdls do. I took it out crop damage shooting last year and my buddy that hunts with me was skepical about shooting it but after he shot a couple deer he said the same thing. Aint much more then a 300 win mag at least not enough to put it in another league. Probably the only reason it has a bit more is i load 200 partitions to 3000 in it and most of the 300s we shoot for crop damage are loaded with 165s

model 7 in laminated wood bought new in 2005. it is accurate as heck even with cheap ammo. wouldnt trade it or sell it.

The only one I've ever owned is in 8mm RemMag, and I've found it to kick like a mule (if I don't have the muzzle brake on it). I don't have extensive experience with magnums though, having shot .308 Norma, .358 Norma, .303 Epps Belted (.311 Norma) and a .458 WinMag. Next to the 8mm, the .308 Norma kicked the hardest, but it was on a 6 1/2 pound gun.

I just picked one up in 35 Whelen today at a gun show. The barrel just says 700. How do I know what designation it is? classic, BDL, ADL CDL?

Serial number and or date markings. Classic is really kinda a stock option. Don't think an ADL was ever chambered in Whelen. CDL is sorta a BDL/Classic hi-bred.

I believe the cartridge for the 1988 Classic was, indeed, the 35 Whelen.
