I've never notched a lock. I understand that when using 1X19 cable the notching is done by some. I am trying (inadvertently) some 1X19 1/16 cable for cat sets. With tensioning springs I don't notice any slipage. Now to answer your question, If I were to notch the locks I would get a checkering file. These are commomn for both steel and wood and the files for steel cut a number of parallel lines with each pass.

I just cant think of notching a cam to make it work. If it dont lock -trash it- use something else. There are a lot of good locks out on the market. As you see I am no big fan of cams.Of corse that might be cause they rust and dont work at all in salt air and water. They freeze up in wet cold weather. If I wanted to have something freeze up I would set steel. In my book the SLIM LOCK is the best for now any how. That is till something better comes along. And you can bet on that. We trappers are always inproving our traps and snares.

Naw New Wacky only idea of hopping is when he catches burros in his yote traps and he hops around trying not to get kicked or bit!
