I was taught how to reload and cast bullets by an old friend who owned 2 original Remington RBs -- one in 45-70 and the other in 32-40.
Al Blume as an 18 year old had went to Alaska in the 1898 gold rush. He joined the Army and served in the trenches in WW I. He returned to Alaska in 1920 and spent the next 40 years mining, trapping, and lumberjacking.
In 1960, at the age of 80, he decided to move to the warmer climate of Northern Idaho where I met him.
He shot and hunted with those old Rolling Blocks every year until he passed away in 1978. The 45-70 was his "game gun" and the 32-40 was his "varmit rifle" -- he had it mounted with Weaver fixed 6X scope and use to hunt coyote and gophers with it.
He had about 100 acres just outside of my home town where he built a bench and a 100 yard shooting range.
Twice a week he walked to town to go to the post office and to buy "grub" -- 5 miles each way and he refused any rides to get his exercise -- until the day he died.
He was a great mentor who loved old rifles, reloading, hunting, and shooting.
