I like the nice compact feel of my Topper-carries so nicely.However-open sights aren't the best for my aging eyes-so I'm wondering what other people have done-scope-peepsight-fiber optic -sights,holo sight or just leave it with the sights it came with?

I would anticipate hunting shots in my area would be no farther than 100 yards-often half that , which is about right for the 30/30 anyway

I use the Williams WGRS and a Firesight up front, that combination works fine for my old eyes, the Twilight aperture or just the carrier as a ghost ring for hunting, and a small aperture disc for range work.  Otherwise it's a scope, open sight just don't work for me any more, haven't for about 15-20yrs.

same here...the only alternative to a scope I can shoot with is a ghost ring peep sight and a fiber optic front sight.Not too ''traditional''but it works for me

As much as I like the traditional look and carry of open sight rifles, I just dont do all that well with them anymore except for plinkin' and playin'. A smallish scope, once on and I became accustomed to it, has worked very well.
Hey, hits are more fun than misses..what could be wrong with that?!

If I scope it I'm thinking an old Weaver 2 1/2 X would be about right-not to big,and fine for the range of a 30/30 anyway.Too bad the scope companies seem to have abandoned the fixed power low magnification scopes-I find a 2 1/2 X or 4 X more than adequite -even beneficial given most of the deer are shot within 100 yards anyway

Yep......Ive got a 2 1/2 and a 3 X Weaver and they clear the hammer (barely) with low rings, med would probably be a better all round choice depending on which rail you have. There are other similar scopes out there, Im sure, but these are good.

The 4x32 Bushnell Sportsman and Banner may still be available as is the Simmons 4x32 and several other 4x. The Sun Optics may be a Simmons 2½x20 clone, same 5" eye relief, a very popular scope here,  although they have the wrong pic.

I haven't got a rail yet[just the 3 drilled and tapped holes]-that will be something to consider to clear the hammer

There's a bunch of options on the scope rail, the H&R is the most popular, I'd have to put the Leupold in 2nd place IMO, at $5-$6, it's a real bargain too, but doesn't come with a hammer extension, but for another $7-$8, the Uncle Mike's can be had, it's what H&R sells, Midway sells the pair for a reasonable $14, but their surcharge adds $3 if that's all you order.

FWIW, I much prefer the H&R rail over the Weaver, it is a bit thicker, thus higher, and has the cross-slots I need. I have not tried the Leuopld. Even with my low mounted scopes I have dispensed with the hammer extension and use the tip of my thumb under the bell to cock, no problem for me but someone with 'thicker thumbs' might have trouble. At first I missed the ext., because I was used to it, but not now.

I had the same problem with a 45-70 handi I recently bought. I wanted to use the open sights but both front and rear sights were fuzzy to this old geezer's eyes. Here is what I did. The front sight is steel and measures .475 high from the top of the barrel. The rear is a WGOS with a 1/4" high blade. I filed a flat on the front sight at about a 30 degree angle and dabbed on some glow orange enamel paint. then I replaced the blade sight on the WGOS with a fire ring ghost sight made for the WGRS. Part #70919 $9.95 plus shipping from Williams. You can check this out in William's online catalog, page 16, lower right corner of the page. All you use is the top part. loosen one screw, slide out the blade, slide in the fire ring aperture, tighten the screw.

When you look thru the sights you see a green dot at 3 and 9 o'clock and the orange glow dot lined up with both and centered. I find it very easy to use, even without my glasses. This sight works well in all light conditions and I find it very easy to use. It is not a true open sight but a peep sight mounted in a non traditional location. But what the heck, it works for me and was an easy fix.
