$0 and $10 words...
« on: September 17, 2010, 11:20:32 PM »
I don't know how many times recently I've heard someone say "It is what it is" regarding some situation.

What value does that add to a conversation exactly?

Out at lunch, one of my colleagues tells the waiter "Let's do the BLT with avocado."

Huh? What are we gonna "DO" to it?

Having a conversation about 'knowing your roots' with a friend, he says, "You need to know where you're coming from so you can know where you're going."

Sorry, but that's crapola. I could forget that my parents came from Europe and still find my way just fine, thank you.

And an email with an H/R rep, "You must understand that it would behoove us to carefully contemplate the ramifications of a disciplinary action, considering the tenuous situation we will no doubt face, involving a myriad of...

Yeah, I get it. But I could have got it in about five words. You're not impressing me with your command of the English language.

Am I just being a little too critical?

Note to Victor3 I accidently hit modify instead of Qoute.

VICTOR3. HEH, sounds like tm7, he's awful proud of them $10 words, and he uses a lot of them. If you ask a question and your answer is a bunch of $10 words known only to the user, by the time they get done yapping ya have no idea what they said or even remember the question. Language is a way of seperating those of differing status from one another. Trust me, those speaking in grandious language are doing it for affect. It is done to "put you in your place". You are to recognise that you are in the company of superiors, and conduct yourself accordingly. This can just as easily allow you to be treated as one of the elite simply by speaking their language.

Do you consider someone speaking "hood" as inferior to you? Do you really think our current President would have made it to the Whitehouse sounding like Snoop Dog? If you want to be taken seriously by people you need to speak their language and just a bit over  and do it without sounding condescending. Remember Hillary with the black accent she bought from Sears? I'm glad they took it back, I was embarassed for all black people who listened to her.

(Not refering to previous post.) Too many people that I know that use all that grand wordage score peoples intelligence by how they speek or spell. Many of them don't have sence enough to get out of the rain. All they have is an ability to memorize. They have no ability to figure anything out. eddiegjr

There is a balance.  Some people can sound inteligant without sounding like they enjoy hearing themselves speek...others cannot...and again some people just sound stupid...and others like myself...cannot spell!

As far as some of the sayings you were refering too...I could not agree more!  My personal least favorite is...it is what it is...I DESPISE THAT!!!
I am not afraid to make an example out of you

I live in Hawaii, but I wasn't born here (Minnesota originally).  A lot of the locals speak pidgin english - a combination of Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Philippino etc.  I tried picking it up when I first got here back in '77, but it was a dismal failure.  Figured I'd just be true to myself and treat everyone else with respect.  My vocabulary changes relative to my audience.  But my attitude is always the same - respectful.  Only exception is when I get mad and defensive.  Then the big words come out.  But that's my way of being disrespectful and combative.

The primary purpose of speaking/writing is to convey ideas to others. Doesn't matter the lingo, slang, etc.; the purpose is the same. I believe that anyone speaking at either the 'street' level or as a university professor should strive to get their point across clearly and efficiently.

My main gripe (I admit that I'm easily annoyed at times) is that both meaningless and overly wordy communication wastes time. That's no problem if one has the time or is just joking around or shooting the breeze. It can be bothersome in some situations though, like at work when I need info from someone right away. I don't care to sift through fluff, as I have sit through enough useless meetings and read fifty emails a day as it is.

I like what my boss says when someone is going on and on about something...

"I'm sorry, but can I have the summarized version please?"

Yes, its about communication. and what i always say is, your not talking or writing for yourself, your talking or writing so the other people can understand you.
its like the addage, speak like you want to be spoken to.

On a normal day I use lots of $20 words.
Those that you hear around engineers like "clarifier foculator" and other ridiculous words..
But away from work I still revert to my raising with plenty of huh, c'mere, hey, and other slang.

Our Pastor yesterday told about an old Preacher who was known for being long winded, talk forever and repeat himself over and over. One day after an hour or so an old lady stood up and hollered, PREACH IT PHARO, it  bothered the preacher a bit but he kept right on yapping. She did this several more times and the preacher was very angry, finally he hollered out to her, why do you keep saying, PREACH IT PHARO? She smiled and said, pharo wouldn't let the people go either.   Sorry guys; but I am perhaps one who is accused of using $10 words; but believe me it is not for any superiority ploy. I can handle my native language fairly well, but I found people in Europe who handled 4-5 languages with relative ease. In 1957, my unit was on maneuvers at North Ft Polk, LA. where we shared a mess hall with a military intelligence unit (language specialists). Eating SOS one morning, across from a young soldier (both of us about 19), I inquired how many languages he was proficient with. He replied, "if you mean read, write and speak...I have seven". I said, "you must be the best in your company, huh?" He chuckled and pointed to a chubby 'old man' (maybe 40) saying, "You see that master specialist over there...he's our tops...read, write and speak 44 languages".
So if one has a fair command of English..how does that compare ? No snobbishness here...

    Often I use $10 words simply because they are so efficient, allow me to give you a couple examples;
For instance, one could use the words "be circumspect"...or they could say, "examine closely your past, present and likely future, paying special attention to influences from friends, family, environment and all other factors. Sum these up and report on them".   There arer many not commonly used words which operate in just such an efficient way.
there is a German word..'gemutlichkeit" which is simply non-translateable, since it covers such a broad spectrum of thoughts, feelings, tradition, warmth etc, etc.
Now, you guys know that at times I post some lengthy, verbose missives here on Graybeard's, were I to eschew the $10 words, just imagine how lengthy my scribblings would then be !
To be fair; although TM7 and I rarely agree, I believe he uses language in the same way.. one $10 word to replace a small  paragraph.

FGYI:  Here's an attempt at translating 'gemutlichkeit'..it's an effort, but the whole description barely scratches the surface.
