will savage scope bases accept Ruger rings?

Bought a used Savage model 16 at Gander Mtn today. They could not transfer the scope using my ruger rings with Browning bases. So they had to use Millett rings. Is this a ploy to sell me new rings or should the ruger rings fit?

The Ruger rings would not fit. They did what they could to get you going. Personally, I would have just bought a set of bases and rings for the Savage, and let the Ruger rings go with the Ruger rifle. They came with it anyway.
