Range Failure with Huntsman
« on: September 19, 2010, 06:14:00 AM »
Went to the range yesterday to sight in with different scope on my SS/Synthetic Huntsman. Was finally on paper @ 100 when noticed some problems. You see I was using a device the range has that is similar to the Lead Sled. I had concerns in the past about dissipation of energy. Well nursing a sore shoulder I would use the device, since having to shoot so much. Well what happened was the bolt that retains the stock bent, nearly broke, shifting the stock. One more shot could have been bad. Just a reminder of simple physics, that energy has to go somewhere, and it will find the weak point. {Load was 100gr Pyro pellets and 250 grn Hornady Sabots, nothing to high}.

How much weight was in the sled? Sounds like too much or the wrong/defective/loose bolt, I've shot hundreds of rounds from my H&R 500S&W and ruger loads in 45-70s in a leadsled DFT that have much more recoil the a 250gr muzzleloader load could produce without the hint of any problems, but I never use much weight, just the weight of the sled or a couple 5lb sand bags at most, but if the sled can't move at all, bad things can happen.  :-\

Like I said it was a LS "type" device, made by someone at the range out of steel, big, heavy and little to NO movement when shooting. I am sure the LS with it's movement and absorbing 50+ percent of recoil is much better that what I was using which was taking out 95+ percent of recoil, next time I will use a LS.
