Lets go another tokarev is offered, Yugo M57(UPDATE)
« on: September 19, 2010, 03:30:50 PM »
Some sites are offering the yugo m57 tokarev in 7,62x25 for under $200.  I believe it has an 8rd mag too. Then it has a longer handgrip body too with the larger capacity mag.  Does anyone have one yet? There saying its the best pistol in 7,62x25 already.  I guess no one has one yet.

I received my J&G sales yugo M57 TT Tokarev in 7.62x25 today.  I got a brand new yugo tokarev and i paid the extra hand pick $10.  I usually don't do the hand pick thing but i'm very happy with what i received.  The longer hand grip is awesome too it fits my hand better.  I can't wait to put some heat in the pipe now.

Since no one has one yet i ordered one fron J&G sales because it comes with an extra 8rd mag/holster.  We'll see what they send me.  If i like it i may get another for a new CCW pistol because its in 7,62x25 whioch is pretty fast/powerful over the 9mm's.

I'm hearing about problems with some of these yugo toks.  Something about the safety levers being tight or interfering with the firing. It may need some tweeking.  These are brand new guns.

I'd like to see a pic please.   I have the CZ52 & it's great.  But where does the brass go when you shoot it?

If the safety lever is in the same location as that on the Norinco Toks then it can break and fall out or jam the gun.  The safety on the Norinco is a batf design that flat works wrong - it works in the opposite direction as the time honored and genetically correct (for the American male) 1911 safety and acts simply to prevent trigger travel.  These safeties, if poorly fit, will engage by themselves, not engage, enjoy too much travel for a safety and may even break on you (two of mine did)...

The best thing to do with that batf safety is remove it and cover the hole with tape.  Norinco Tokarevs and their parts are not made in one factory where quality control can be maintained.  Frames, slides and internal parts are all made separately and possibly just assembled at the Norinco plant.  Metals are soft and quality control is not the best.  About once every 1,000 rounds I take a set of Swiss files to my Chinese Tok to remove burrs and any peening that has taken place over the past year.

I once wrote to Massad Ayoob about removing the safety on my Tok and he advised against it for liability and told me the Tok was a obsolete design.  Now let's get this straight - don't remove the safety for liability purposes - what the hay do you call a gun with a malufnctioning safety - a liability...  Ok, then he tells me that the TT-33 Tokarev (1933 design or redesign of the Browning 1911 lock-up and pivoting barrel) is obsolete and that I should get a (even older design) 1911.

I think the best Toks out there are either the Russian TT-33 or the Polish made - good hard metal and properly fitting and functional parts..

I have a 1950s or 60s MAB model D. Its a "clone" of the old Browning 1910. The 1910 is a vastly superior design. Looking at the way the safety works and how little there is to hold that striker in place should the gun be dropped or the sear simply wear a little,I would not trust it to carry. Compare that to the 1910,which is a solid Browning design. Just becuase something is a "clone" of something JMB designed does not mean its good. Im not familiar with Tokerevs so I dont know if this applies here, but certainly its something to keep in mind. Then again,Massad Ayoob is very concerned with how things will look in court and potentially giving ammunition to a prosecutor or someone suing you. Honesty, I cant say hes wrong on that. I do however sometimes come to a different conclusion. If you want to avoid ALL potential liability for carrying a gun, dont get a gun. Everything else involves risk of liability. Not having a gun involves risk of being in a gun fight without one. (and as well all know,Ayoobs first rule of gun fighting is,bring a gun) I think each of us should understand the potential liabilities and make our decision based on how much risk is acceptable.

I believe what I have read is the crappy safety was not on the origanals and was cobbed on so they could be imported to the US. Place up the road from me has one there now that was made in Romainia for 230 bucks.

Being that the mag is longer with its larger capacity the yugo m57 TT feels better than the rest in my hands.  I been buying the cans of ammo from CIA too.  Its probably the cheapest pistol to feed along with the 9mm largo so it keeps us in the affordable shooting/plinking range for now.

For some reason my new puter won't post pics with the kodak program.  My son can't get it to work on my new dell puter.

I believe you are right.  I have a ChiCom that I took off a NVA Captain and it doesn't have a safety.

There are some articals written on the backwoods home magazine site about firearms by other authors that are interesting if Ahab(ayoob) bores us.  I like the one about the military surplus rifles being game getter.  It fueled my interests more into surplus guns.

Richard:  I would be interested to know if your's is marked with Chinese characters or if it is marked in English.  As for ammo - I would first get a set of new Springs from Wolfe Springs in Ardmore, PA., and then get a supply of ammo from Sellier and Bellot (best commercial stuff out there from the European Continent) or from Ron Reed, one of our moderators and sponsors who makes the best 7.62x25mm ammo on this side of the big pond.  And, while you are at it get a couple of extra magazines - those Toks can sure burn up a lot of ammo in a short time.

Oh yeah, if you want to change the firing pin spring, the pin that hold the firing pin in place is a split roll pin, not s screw as it seems to be, and you need a specific type or style of punch to remove those pins without damaging them - it's a pretty easy job with the right tools.  And, the hammer spring is under a lot of pressure but can be remove and the hammer/trigger group disassembled for cleaning, rust removal, lubricating and polishing.  These things can be so much fun when they are not being shot at you ....

S.S. - Yep, I feel the same way ....................

The Tok's with no safeties(bring backs in some cases) are worth much more on the tok market. So far all my toks have safety levers and they all seem to work ok.

As I remember the markings are Chinese but I could be wrong.  I haven't looked at it in several years and it is in a safety deposit box with some other handguns.  I keep meaning to get them out as I've got 3 safes at home...  :-\
