Buck Selector knife: looking for another blade
« on: September 20, 2010, 03:25:15 PM »
I recently picked up a Buck Selector folding knife complete with a sawtooth blade which can be replaced by the #42801+ a clip 4in. blade. I want to know if they made a guthook blade for this combo knife and where can I find one?  This combo was made in the mid-1980's I believe.

Thanks.

I don't believe they made a true gut hook but they made a blade with a rounded blunt end to be to be placed in an opening and cut from inside out.  Mine is straight cut for about one inch and serrated the rest of the blade.  The number is 42805.

Smokey Mountain Knife Works carried these at one time.  Try placing a WTB add in the general classifieds.

Thanks for that piece of info. If I could find one would that blade work as a gut hook or would I be better off trading this knife off and finding a separate gut hook knife?

It works on the same principle as the gut hook, it is just not a "hook".  I like the Gerber that uses the replaceable  utility knife blades.  About 12.00 at Wally world.

I have several handles and lots of different blades for the buck selector knives, the ball tip blade was hard to sharpen and you needed another blade to get into the skin so I ground the ball off and sharpened the whole blade and it works much better now, my favorite blades are the drop point ones which it use a bunch for gutting and skinning deer, I don't like the serrated blades so I ground off the serrations and made regular blades out of them and they work much better for what I use them for. They also made clip, and hawkbill blades but most of mine are drop points since I like them the best.

I have one of the originals that came with three blades. One is fixed and the other is replaceable. The serrated in the photo is in the replaceable position. Here's mine:
