Think it would kind-da be like putting a $3,000 scope on one but it could be done and should work well

Yes, there is licensing....I wasn't thinking of that.  For some reason I was just thinking about someone (average joe) putting one on for the heck of it without any type of license.

It is not illegal in Va. you do have to be approved by local LEO , apply to own one with ATF and pay a tax if approved when you transfer ownership . Some counties and cities will approve it others will not. Same for machine guns , short bbl rifles and shotguns. You must also keep paper work in a safe place , keep a copy of paper work with the slencer at all times . It most likely is different in other states .
I have heard of several people using single shot rifles to hush a little. One thing to keep in mind is for the device to work it takes sub sonic ammo to get really quiet. It  reduces the signature of full power ammo but not as much as many are led to believe. Point is 308, 5.56 and several others are offered in sub sonic so you might want to decide if you want really quiet or just a softer bang. They alos have a life and some can be rebuilt while others cannot. Some can be taken apart and cleaned others need soaking to clean. Some use water or grease while others don't . Also most good dealers will walk the paper work thru. for you.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

That would be hard to do for for a dealer . Of course someone might hose clamp a briggs and stratton muffler on one  :o but wouls it be worth losing your rights over  ??? and going to jail ?

If you want to be quiet in the woods, use a bow, crossbow, spear, slingshot, pellet gun, snares and traps.  You can also use .22 CB longs in a rifle.  Snares and traps can probably yield a lot of eatable game, as well as fishing for survival.  Also a book of eatable plants.

Some of the best predator hunting is in areas where folks don't want to hear shooting in the weee hours of the night. And if you like to call um up a trap just don't cut it . And yes we trap  its also fun.

as i see it, the paranoia that exists amongst legislators is the biggest hurdle of all. they certainly do NOT limit law enforcement in using 'silencers'.

Silencers (suppressors), are far from illegal. A $200 tax stamp and a background check, and you can have one too (as long as they are legal in your state).

A good dealer will show you what to do. Also a legal dealer won't transfeer it to you if it is illegal.

Suppressors(silencers) are illegal in some states and to varying degree in others, for instance, suppressors are legal to own in Washington state, but not use on a weapon!!  ::)

The Handi Rifle is a GREAT host for a suppressor.  No action noise, short package...which is a consideration when you add the weight/length of a suppressor.  I have one on a Handi in 7.62x39 (barrel cut to 16.25") and it's freakishly quiet with a .308 suppressor shooting subsonic handloads.  Also,  have a 45LC barrel threaded, just waiting on the ATF to approve my paperwork for the 45 suppressor.
Like Handi Rifles, suppressors are a VERY addictive hobby.

Suppressors are legal in most states, but like most things in this country, you have to do your paperwork and pay the tax...then wait several months for approval....or you can skip the paperwork and the tax... then cool your heels in jail...for much longer...waiting on the parole board.

For more information: there is a website called silencertests.com  that is essentially the "consumer reports" of silencers.  I researched for over 2 years before my first purchase.

If you want to be really cool, you could SBR a handi (another $200 tax stamp), to about 9'' and then thread and add a suppressor. :)

If cool is the plan then let them use the bbl as the inter tube for the sl. and put a piece of armoflex insulation over it ? They do it with ruger 22's all the time. You get a longer bbl and a sl at the same time . The insulation keeps your hand from a burn and looks like a supper bull bbl.  ;D

Wonder if anyone has tried making a bbl extension for a rifle like they do for a metro gun ?

sorry Pete , some people use the barrel of the gun as the inside tube of the slincer . They drill holes or cut slots in the bbl and slide baffles and an outer tube over the barrel to make the slincer . This allowes the barrel to be longer with an over all length not to long like adding a sl to the end. Some people also add the black insulation as protection from a hot barrel . It done right it makes a nice looking set up. Some of these can be taken apart with a spanner or by cutting the welded end and cleaned and rebuilt . When you consider a sl will run $700.00 to over $1000.00 in the investment being able to clean or rebuild is a good option.
As a note you are only allowed the one sl on the tax stamp having extra parts may be a violation of the law. So you can't have an extra tube or baffles as i understand it . But being able to clean it or send it back for a rebuild is nice.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thanks for the info shootall.  I think I'll save the tax stamp and hassle, wear ear protection and give a crap less what the neighbors think.....they're at least a quarter of a mile away.  I just thought it might be neat for knocking out several raccoons or coyotes at the same time without the others knowing what was going on, but it just isn't worth it.  Instead, shoot, wait ten minutes and they'll be back.  It's a heck of a lot cheaper.

our local town here just had a herd of deer culled by a group of shooter licensed by the state game commision, one of the requirements put forward by the city was a pistol cal. weapon and the use of a suppressor.  they were using 45lc with a can and shooting from treestands over bait buckets single shots into the ground    all this was within the city limits and between an interstate thruway and a major local road.     it was in carlisle , pa

Have you tried a Metrogun? I just got couple Invector Plus tubes. Interesting stuff. About 36", very light, lotsa holes. Unfortunately, I will probably end up buying a BPS just to try it out. The noise level claims are quite good. Same as a car door closing at 100 feet. I imagine that with a 12 gauge slug, it could do a job on urban animals.

Silencers are legal in the 'People's Republik of Maryland,' but are illegal for hunting >:(!  Need to go through class 3 dealer, State Police, and ATF before you can take possession.  Don't even think of making one (easy as it is), regardless where you live, without a Manufacturer's license.

I have a Handi chambered in .22 Hornet.  The previous owner had it set up for a silencer, but wasn't happy with the resulting accuracy or the degree of noise suppression.  I have yet to shoot it.

I have one on one of my NEF 30-06s.  I use sub-sonic ammo.  All you hear when I shoot is a soft whisper, just like you hear in movies.  The bullet striking the target makes more noise.  I shoot with no hearing protection and hear a soft whoosh, then a Thunk when the bullet strikes.  With sub-sonic loads the bullets don't expand, just a hole in and a hole out.  I can shoot a Fox without blowing it in half.  Have not tried Ballistic Tips or TNTs yet.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

its really funny-in some countries-silencers are REQUIRED,and in places like New Zealand its just considered another option ,its really just a hearing health issue...why its illegal here,I don't really know-last time I heard-criminals don't worry too much about silencers when they use a gun

What load do you use and how fast is it going? I just loaded about 2 boxes of 30-30's to play with in my SB1. 1.6cc scoop of Trail Boss behind a 170 grain LaserCast should go a little over 1000fps. If it works OK, I'll try it in my .300 Win Mag :)

Criminals don't worry about didly squat when they use a gun.....that's why most of our gun laws are inane and unenforceable.  All they do is give honest dealers and citizens hoops to jump through and support another useless bureaucracy...that we pay for.  Somehow, the criminals don't contribute ??? ???  I wonder why?
