Data for loading for pistol calibers in rifles??
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:55:31 AM »
I have Handi Rifles in .38, .357, .357 Maximum, .44 Mag and .445 Super mag.  I've got a lot of loading data for them, but 90% of it is for pistols.  Does anyone know of a good source of reloading data for pistol caliber carbines.

Thanks,

Pete

same load data just different listed velocities.   Find the slowest relative burn rate powder to maximize your velocity.

Since they are all "modern" cartridges, the loads will prolly be the same for handguns vs rifles. Of course the velocities will differ with bbl. lengths, but loads are the same. I have one manual, Lyman I think, that the .44 Mag rifle section and the .44 mag handgun section loads listed are identical

Yeah, MDI, I have the Lyman book, and I saw that.  I just thought a slower burning rifle powder might give me some more get up and go out of the longer barrel.

Hey petemi...I downloaded the Hodgdon Load Data from http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp and cross-referenced the pistol with rifle loads for the 357 Mag while working up my Handi-.  It looks like the 357 Mag are the same or use some different powders, which is no comparison.

My biggest concern is making loads that are stronger for the rifle then forgetting and attempting to shoot them through the pistol.  Probably not a good idea.  Some folks color their rounds for that purpose.  If I make them the same and not exceed the pistol, then interchangeability results.

Hornady has load data in their manual for .357 and 44. Most of these rounds powder capacity is the limiting factor.

I've had great luck using slow burning Reloader7 in my .45 Colt.  I read the blurb on it in Paco Kelley's article on lever guns and decided to give it a go, since I use only that in my .45-70 anyway.  I loaded up 25 gr., which is no where near max, and it shoots stellar.  Very accurate, less kicky than H-110 or higher loads of Unique.  Hornady's FTX load notes have some .44 mag. rifle data for them, but you'll have to see if any of their powders listed are closer to what you are looking for.  Good luck bud.  8)

Oh, I do get some pistol cal. rifle data from Handloads.com also if you want to check them out.:
