Rebarrel question on a Rem 700 22-250?
« on: September 22, 2010, 04:25:56 PM »
I have a great shooting Remington 700 SPS Varmint 22-250 up for sale here on GBO. I really want a long range rifle such as a 308 Win, 260 Rem or a 6.5 Creedmoor. If my rifle does not sell at my asking price I will rebarrel it in the spring when work picks back up. If it does sell I will just buy the exact same rifle in a 308Win. Well here is my question. I am torn between a 260 or the 6.5 Creedmoor. When I do the rebarrel it would be one of them 2 but I am leaning more toward the Creedmoor. If you guys have another sugestion for a good long range rifle please chime in. I have decided on a Shilen barrel in their stainless match grade barrel that will be threaded and chambered. Will it be as simple as my gunsmith cutting the shoulder for correct headspace and screwing it on? I see that the COL on the 260 is 2.800 inches and the COL of the Creedmoor is 2.820 inches. My 22-250 COL is 2.350 inches and I have my handloads set at a COL of 2.50 inches now and they still work in the magizine. Do you know if I am going to have a problem with the extra lenght with my current mag? Will my bolt face be ok and not need to be worked on in any way? I have tried to do some research on this and think I have things pretty much covered but want to make sure this is a doable thing with not to much work for the gunsmith due to his costs. Do you have any idea what he might charge to do the above work? Do you know of another company that makes good barrels that are accurate that would cost me less? It looks like for the stainless steel match barrel that is threaded and chambered is going to cost me $483.00 plus $10.00 shipping. I would like to be able to get that cost down some if you know of another maker of quality barrels. Thanks in advance and take care Dale

Should work just fine and if there is a problem it would be a feed issue. The action is the short action and bolt face the same. I doubt a magazine box change will be needed.. As to barrels.. a lot depends on what you want the rifle to do. Shilen match grade barrels are really good but so are others. The problem is prices usually reflect costs to the maker. If all that's needed is good hunting accuracy then a fairly large amount of cash could be saved but a long range target (tactical) rifle demands premium accuracy and prices to match.. I really like Douglas barrels but stick mostly with hunting rifles though some have been truely spectacular shooters..

Get a 260 or 7mm08 Dale, higer BC is what long range is all about.

Go here ( http://www.benchrest.com/shooterscorner/thelist.pdf and go down to about page 22, you will find a whole list of BR barrels, high end takeoff barrels from BR guns.  Most will be 6 BR's which seem the be the BR choice now?  I am not into this type of shooting.  Take a look, lots of very famous maker barrels for little money.  Buy one, get it set back an inch, and see what it will do for you.  Larry

Thanks Larry. The heck with buying a barrel there. Did you see the price of their used rifles. You can get some custom rigs there very very cheap and that is where I will be looking to buy my next rifle. Thanks again Dale
