Loads for 35 Whelen
« on: September 23, 2010, 10:36:40 AM »
I just ran across a 35 Whelen barrel, now I gotta start thinking about loading for it.  I've seen a few load on the 'net' using 3031, and mention that win748 can be used, but no real data.  My Hornady #7 manual doesn't list any loads for 3031 or win748.  I would like to try to find a good load using either of these powders since I got a bunch of it.  Any of you folks know any good recipes?  I'll probably try loading everything from 180's to 250's till I find out what I like.  Thanks in advance.

drdoug, thanks for the link...good reading and info there, I may switch over to RL15 or something else one day.  I've got a couple of 8#ers of 748 and 3031 that I need to burn up.

necchi, thanks for taking the time to check those manuals, and passing the info along. The couple of loads that I found on the net for 3031 fell within that range from your Sierra#5, that makes me feel much safer about trying it.

Again, many thanks

That`s why they make chev`s and Ford`s. I only crimp rounds that I am afraid the bullets will pull because of recoil while in the mag. and I hate all thing`s Lee.

I have been shooting RL 15 for 20 years in my Remington 700. Back then Hercules/ Alliant listed 60 gr of RL 15 as the max load. I developed a load of 57 gr of  RL 15 that I have used ever since. Now they have backed off until that is over max. Is this just due to litigation, or has the powder actually changed that much? I appreciate the link though, as this is the 1st loads for the 358009 bullet I have seen in some time.

Just so you know...I'm actually listening to the advice that I asked for.  I was out yesterday getting some new hunting boots and saw a 1#er of RL-15 so I picked it up.  I'll probably just go right to loading with it, as it seems much more popular (with you guys, and the reloading manuals) than 748 or 3031.  One other thing I wanted to ask is have any of you loaded any using the Hornady 200gn FTX (the leverevolution bullet)? and if so what were your results???  that is to say, is it worth doing?, as those FTX are a bit more pricey than the SPs.

drdoug, if you happen to read this, I was curious which of the Lee fac.crimp dies you got that will work on the 35Whelen? #90904 or #90828, thanks.

Just a note that may help you find some good loads for your 35 Whelen. Run out to your local magazine rack and find the October Guns & Ammo magazine. They have a really good work up on the 35 Whelen this month with many different bullets and powders.
